I just thought we were getting a how-to-clinic on alienating an audience, Guido, but if you wanna go with the "we're just friends" story, I'll back you up, it's more fun. :) You can be Brad, I'll be Angelina, we'll deny everything. Not that there's anything to deny, of course. How was that?

And the not-so-distant sound of them breathing down your neck! *shudder*

True story, when I was working there, Mike Dorwart was the morning host on sister station WOKV when the city sent out a press release stating that Jacksonville was approaching a population count of one million. I walked over and grinned that my brother was moving to town a couple of days hence, and he was probably the Millionth Guy. Mike grabbed it and ran with it on the air. My brother drove in a couple of days later and I was on overnights, so I had him come to the station under the ruse of taking me to breakfast. Instead, we put him on the air while listener after listener donated goods, services, locally-made products (Swisher Sweets and a Flat Mop, dangit!), website hosting, restaurant certificates, golf coupons, car repair discounts, and more than one offer of a date to welcome Jacksonville's Millionth Guy---in all, about $3000 value. About 9:20 am, we walked him outside to take a look at the tower, and Vinnie, the traffic light-plane pilot, buzzed the station with a banner flying behind that read WOKV AND JACKSONVILLE WELCOME DAVID TAYLOR!!! It was goofy, but a whole lot of fun. Great town, great listeners, great radio, great host.

That's pretty good, Mojo. But, I'm having trouble paying off all the photogs. This thing may be getting out of control! Then again, any publicity can be helpful.

There's only one thing we can do. Call W magazine and let's schedule a photo shoot. THAT'll throw 'em off the trail!

Wow! What are the chances they could send some of that radio fun to Houston? We sure could use it!

That, or an appearance on Larry King Live....assuming, of course, that he still is.

I hear he's got Keith Richards' plastic surgeon. That guy does great work!

Hard to believe it was less than 10 years ago that you could do crazy stuff like that. I'll tell you, though, it made a believer out of me, like nothing ever could, in the power of earning the listeners' trust. You show that you care about their daily lives, they'll play along with any game you propose---in fact, overwhelm you with love. It's a partnership, and like any bargain, you don't get unless you give. Mike Dorwart had that knack, and I'll always be grateful for those lessons.

Get his name. I'll be needing it before long. BTW: I had a strange dream, last night.....I turned on the TV and there was a panel discussion between Keith Richards and James Brown, hosted by Hunter Thompson. It had English subtitles.

He needs to give lessons to the lawyers and accountants running the radio business today. Radio....such a powerful medium, and so squandered!

True dat.

My apologies for misspelling Mike's last name. It occurred to me while driving around this afternoon that I had done so---it's not Doherty, but Dorwart.

Pronounced the same either way: Dorrrt. :) Deep South and all.
