Community Auditions is Back (Ch 50/NECN/CW in Portland)

Before there was American Idol or The Gong Show, there was Community Auditions on WBZ-TV 4. The other
day I saw a promo for a new "Community Auditions" show on WZMY-TV 50 out of Derry, NH and I just
happened to see the final few minutes of an episode of it right now.

Apparently the show is taped at Mohegan Sun and features a band doing the familiar theme: Star of
the day, who will it be? Your vote may hold the key. A female folk duo won. Among the judges:
J.J. Wright, and "Sib" (who I assume is Sib Hashian from the band Boston). Apparently the grand
prize that will ultimately be awarded is a car (as well as studio recording time, etc.)
The credits went by pretty quickly but the first name that came up: "Thanks to Dave Maynard"

They have a site: http://www.communityauditions.com
Apparently it's also on New England Cable News and the CW station in Portland.

OK, so Creature Double Feature is back. So is Community Auditions. When will Candlepins
for Cash be revived? :) It's up to you...tell us who...will be star of the day.

---I guess it's actually been back for several months, and it also airs on NECN and on the CW station
in Portland. The following page has more info--Dave Maynard did appear as a judge, and it mentions
the original show as being hosted by a Gene Burns. The talk host we know?

http://www.communityauditions.com/media.html

The hosts are "Lori Grande from WKLB and Jackson Blue from Kiss 108".
The article says the show had also aired on Ch 5 as "Dave Maynard Talent Showcase"

Candelpins for Cash was revived a few years ago as "Candlepins for Dollars" on WLVI. A backstory on why it's not back on the air is available on the show's blog: http://candlepindollars.com/id28.html. In short, Sunbeam Television (now the owners of 56) didn't want to air the show; the producers bought the program from management earlier this year.

"Creature Double Feature," from what I understand, is actually just a long paid program that Ernie Boch buys to air the films.

>>actually just a long paid program that Ernie Boch buys to air the films.

Boch has a connection to the new Comm. Auditions--does some kind of
bit on it & provides the car for the grand prize

btw I may have said that Gene Burns was the orig. host of the show; someone
on boston-radio-interest said it was actually Gene _Jones_. I was going by
the article (on the show's site) by the Globe's Beverly Beckham; the former
Herald scribe had said Gene Burns was the orig. host. Guess not.

it's been back since january. it's nothing more than a big marketing tie-in to mohegan sun.

Does the show begin and end with a Paid Program disclaimer (especially since it airs on NECN, which is supposed to be a news channel)?

Speaking of American Idol, and from what I've read in the past, former Idol contestant (and Wrentham, MA native) Ayla Brown has been a guest judge several times since the show came back.

You wanna bring back old local shows?? How about the old Good Day! show from Channel 5?? I believe John Willis died a few years ago but Eileen Prose could handle it alone. Maybe Evening Magazine could come back. Marty Sender is no longer with us (hmmm...I smell a trend there) but what's Robin Young up to these days?? How about People Are Talking?? Didn't Tom Bergeron host that, amongst others?? He's kinda busy though, what with hosting Dancing With The Stars, America's Funniest Videos, and everything else that Ryan Seacrest didn't take. ;D

Now the only program that's missing is "Dialing for Dollars", right?

I'm waiting for Willie Whistle to come back. How about "Ask The Manager" too! Did I mention that I miss "People Are Talking?" ;)

I think John Willis is the father of J.W. of JW in the Morning on WKLB
Resemblance?

(Confirmation: Yes; from NorthEast Radio Watch 1/30/02:
"And we're sorry to report the passing of John Willis, the first host of WCVB's "Good Day" in the seventies and the father of John "J.W." Willis, current morning host at WKLB-FM (99.5 Lowell). Willis died last Wednesday (Jan. 23) in Baltimore, we're told.")

TV38?

The second season would appear to be airing on TV38.

If you go to the homepage (tv38.com) and scroll through the video tabs all the way to the right, "Community Auditions" is listed. No videos are posted yet, however.

It will be nice to see the show with a far better picture quality than WZMY's.

Maybe Solid Gold will make a comeback!!

I remember that the original "Community Auditions" was sponsored by Community Opticians, which I found very confusing when I was four years old.

When I see Dave Maynard in those rest home ads, I begin singing,

Star of the Day, Who will it be?
::)

With the production qualities and talent of American Idol, this show looks even more hokey than the original. You think?

Which also makes better sense since TV38 is run out of 1170 Soldiers Field Road (WBZ-TV studios) now, so in a way, its come home!
