Compellor in front of Ariane Sequel ?

I have a nice combo with Ariane Sequel (Matrix mode) + Omnia 6EXi (Broadband AGC off). The sound is great but I'm still unhappy with the way it compensates the board's level "differences". I don't want so speed up the Ariane AGC release or reduce the IDR window because I really like how it sounds now. I think to add a Compellor 300 in front (in Leveler mode only). Ariane user's manual claims that it doesn't need anything before, so I'm interested to know if others here had a same experience.

Me, personally, I would never totally defeat the AGC on the Omnia6. I don't think it's a good idea. I would slow it, but not defeat it. Everything in that box is made to work in concert.

Is the Ariane getting enough input level to do it's thing?

I have no experience with the sequel...but the original Ariane, I can vouch for: it needed absolutely nothing in front of it. It's THE king mack-daddy of levelers.

For that matter, I prefer not to put anything in front of my Omnia, either. But that's another story. ;)

I've read some topics here about the O6's WB AGC On / Off debate. About the Sequel, it's more a release time compromise to preserve the actual AGC good transparency with music and to compensate a clean "hand on the pot" level from the console. I recently slowed the Ariane AGC release because it was a little audible during some music passages.

I would never put a compellor 300 in front of anything let alone a sequel. It will duck on material which may become even worse through the chain. If the Sequal can't handle the input already, then sure the compellor won't do much better. Maybe a 320A but still this sounds like you need modest tweaking with the stuff you have rather than put more in front and end up more tweaking to keep everything in line.

I have had a number of people tell me that using the generic Omnia6 version of the CGSmooth preset as-is plays great with the Ariane. I would think the only thing you may want to do is to possibly decrease the wideband AGC drive some if you go this route...but take a while to listen first, and let your ears guide you to your first parameter change. Maybe even check back here (or e-mail me) about what you are hearing for some suggestions as to what to tweak if you feel "stuck"....

Dumb question: Is the Ariane just an AGC, or is it an AGC/compressor combo?

Well...technically it is an AGC, with little or no compressor 'sound.'

Think of it as a device that adjusts overall long-term levels/spectral balance/stereo stage as you might yourself, if you never needed to sleep and you had enough hands and coordination to adjust eight pots at a time.
;)

Just as with a careful board op, you should rarely hear it work.

Kind Regards,
David Reaves
