Alot of good points have been made concerning competing with KKOB. Here's my take..just my opinion.
Newstalk is an expensive format to run correctly. KKOB is the heritage newstalk station in Albuquerque. It was built on consistency and being known as the source for local news because of a solid news committment staffed with professionals. Add top syndication and great talent in live dayparts..plus Lobos and it is hard to dethrone. It is a machine made up of parts. Those parts are replaceable, and when they are, the machine keeps rolling. Larry enjoyed a great run there, but was a part. Chris had a great run, but was a part.
I feel it is hard to recreate "glory days", by
going to another station with "your audience". It did work somewhat with Tony and T.J. is staying put and enjoying his well deserved run.
AGM has shot their wad, and it can't dent the machine.
If some company wants to compete, it's going to take the best of talent, background staff and lots of money. In this age of consolidation, it's hard to name any entity that might make that committment.
The only one in the near future that can bring KKOB down is KKOB.
This exact situation happened in Phoenix with heritage KTAR. It was the dominant newstalker. Now it is a shell of it's former self. And it only happened from within.
