Complaints about a few stations......

1. Every morning at 4:40 a.m. or around that time, Classic Hits 97.1 says "now kicking off another 40 minute music rock block" (or whatever). Excuse me, but Bob and Tom starts in 20 minutes. And all they do is blab their heads off.

2. Sick, sick, sick of V-102.5's generic satellite at night programming. It is so cheap - why can't they hire a night time dj? And their ratings are in the toilet. Do something different!

3. Tired of Mix 92-9 playing "She's Like The Wind" every single day (or at least every other day) and the mushy gushy Delilah show where people call up with their sappy love stories...."I knew when I looked in her eyes....we cuddle up...my heart goes pitter pat..." GAG

Roadrunner,

I shocked about your comments. It is apparent that you don't understand the cost of running a broadcast facility. There is WAY MORE to this than what you think. Alot of stations rely on satellite because of expenses of the operating capitol with the take in of sales. The slugish economy has caused a lot of this. It is not in the budget to just run out and hire someone to sit on thier can and run a board all night when we have Dell PCs and software than can do the same task.

From 12 AM to 5:30 AM is dead weight for most stations. The majority of the stations are automated Voice Tracked or Satellite during that daypart. I think Bud Walters needs to hire you as a sales person for 102.5/102.9/AM 1550. You will find that it is tuff to sell that overnight. Ratings do not having a thing to do with it, it's money. This is where all the group owners and independent broadcasters agree and it's the best way to save a buck.

Sorry, allow me to correct my comment above ... huge group HUG.

I have to disagree with the fact that it's cheaper to use satellite programming than park a person on their can. That's $10 an hour.
C'mon, market #44, even with that half-baked digital signal (which cost Bud thousands to lessen/weaken his coverage of Davidson
County) shouldn't have "programming" that bad. That very type of thing is costing Crumwell thousands a month. Lulu leaves at
7 pm; you pay someone from 7-12 to be live and you are right ---forget 12-6. Your music, your life, blah, blah, blah on there sounds
so cheap and makes it sound like a totally different station at night. AT least find a good night program. Mix was smart to put John Tesh
overnights, but that would have worked if they lightened their format. It's tough to have any good Hot AC's that are not live and local.
I haven't heard any programming that made the cut, yet. I think that's the real problem. Hot AC V-style is not what Nashville listeners
want, but yet they are very close to being on to something. Why can't anyone over there figure out how easy it is???

The station is tanking because it's music is not solid and consistent, the air staff during the day is decent to good and then it
all falls apart at night and sounds like market #2387. It's an embarrassment.

And when did the economy soften? Call JXA and ask them for the list of clients that cannot get on the air because it's booked solid!
Similiar format, better quality and everyone loves Delilah because it sounds GOOD. How hard can it be???

Lady "D" did the same thing at sister station WIKY in Evansville.. Back in the end 90's and early 00's... They dumped a live local gal with a 17 share in the 7 to 12:am mark and wouldn't you know???? "D" did a 20+ in her first book and has never faltered, since.. Just a strong female based national show... Excuse me, I must go put on my old Three Dog Night LP.... ;D

Tibbs,
Don't hand me that it is cheaper to PAY warm body to sit thier can babysitting the board than to put the station on satellite. YOU MUST BE OUT OF YOUR MIND! Look at what the broadcaster saves when the station is on satellite, and it's one less person to pay!

From the looks of your comments above, you have never ran a station before! Arbitorn ratings and market #'s mean nothing when it comes down to the accounting/accounts payable of a station!

Don't tell me you would rather have some Vol State student in there than have a professional announcer from a satellite service. You must be a ACLU cheerleader!

R

Someone's a big cheerleader for generic programming. At least automate locally and have your own sound. I've programmed and won in markets far smaller and we had no use for satellite at any time.

Jimmy,
There is a way to do satellite and make it sound live and local. The problem has been with satellite is this additude of "Throw it on the bird" and let it go, by many
GM's & Owners. YOU CAN NOT DO THAT!
I've run a satellite format for 13 years and I know how to program it with the network and make it sound local. You must have network jocks do as many local psa's, liners, shout outs etc.

This frees up your time from worrying about music, and get out there and sell!

This is what is wrong with most of the people on this board, we are too busy trying telling Owners & GM's how to program stations instead of getting your lazy ass out there and SELL! Wanna be PD's! God Bless'em! They haven't learned a station doesn't survive and it sells, changes format, or BOTH because of lazy sales people or people too busy worrying about programming!

R

There is no way to make a satellite format sound local. Granted most of the listeners are not paying enough attention to notice, but you won't fool those that do.

And yes, I would rather have the Volunteer State student on at night. At least they can tell me the time, Vanderbilt basketball score, and if a tornado is coming toward my house.

1. I'm going with Tibbs on this one - you must never sleep! However, listening to Bob and Tom is the cure for that!
2. True true true - but it could be worse. Imagine if they went to that "Movin'" format! Count your blessings!
3. Mix 92-9 - I like the chemistry on the morning show, but I agree that the playlist is a tad stale. If 102.5 had a little more power, they might be able to go up against them by having a more 'modern' playlist, but the weak signal is going to continue to be a problem for them.

Also...
briancraig - I agree. Everyone on this board would know a satellite, but the far majority of people don't have a clue. Earlier this evening, I told my wife that most of the programming on WANT-FM is on the bird ("Real Country"). She had no idea.
rock011 - Yet again, you stump me. I understand your anti-oldies stance, but you've also been burned by some sales guys! Remember this - it's a lot easier to sell a Toyota than a Yugo. If the product you're programming is a Yugo, it won't sell. Only a programmer would blame a lack of success on the lazy sales people and vice versa.

I sleep eight hours a day. I just work 3rd shift....as for satellite programming, whatever. But I think it'd be great if they had a real live dj around the clock. They used to be able to do it back in the 70s and 80s...now it's all about cuts, cuts, cuts...Let a computer do the work. I'm sure within 5 years I will be replaced by a computer as well.

HA! You've got to be joking! That Vol State student is to wraped up in music to worry about a Vandy Basketball Score or a Tornado coming towards your house. I've seen many stations I worked at in the 80's and early 90's where the jock didn't have a clue to what was going on even outside of the building!

A perfect example is to listen to PM drive on WVOL. The girl sounds like a typical Vol State Student, and has NO clue of how radio should be. Is this what you want? I rather let the Scott Studio's Automation run with the music and to hell with the jock! Oh the tornado deal, that's what we have EAS for.

R

If you have EAS!!!! You've got to be kidding. NOTHING replaces real live people during an emergence like a tornado or ice storm or ---- whatever it may be that is a threat to your community. During last spring's tornadoes, one Nashville station stood above the crowd...and could do it again. Another was repeating what was being said on television. And if you've got a wire service....and not may do and I'm guessing R11 doesn't either --- don't try to keep up with what's current by only reading what they send you.

I've found most interns from the local colleges anxious to learn. Yes they are tied up in the music, but if you let them know what you expect....and if there are tornado warnings, as a knowing and interested owner/manager/news/music/traffic person...I would join them at the station and do some OJT with them.

I travel often, and when I hear "it's 10 past the hour" I figure it's coming off a bird and Mr/Ms announcer doesn't know whether it's raining...snowing or the sky is falling in your neighborhood and if I'm looking for info...........bye.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Number 1 is just a case of some idiot who can't or doesn't care to program the right liners! Hell, they might not even know! If it's that much of an annoyance, it might be a good idea for you to mention it to them.

As for Number 2.. if you hate generic satelitte programming, don't ever move outside of a big market. I know TONS of small AM and FM station, some of them there in Nashville metro and others all over the USA that are not only satelitted/automated evenigns and ovenights but 24/7! While *YOU* may not like it, it;s cost effective for their listeners and clients

They pay no DJ salary but they are able to provide their listening area with the music they want, clients with the results they want.. and everyone is making money and happy!

Olebud....Buddy

That might work at C.C. or TRN, but at single small stations with limited budgets, it won't. I've gone that route and I won't do it again. I will admit, we do have problems with EAS and it is the FCC's fault, but instead of hiring some kid to stay in there and run the board, even during times when there really isn't anything going on, it's not cost effective for the small station operator. The OWNERS AND GM's need to jump in and be the announcer/board op during times of bad weather!
Small "daytime" AM operators have fully staffed thier stations, jump in there with no budget, expecting to set the world on fire. Instead, they caught they budget on fire and lost thier butts.

The late Ron Simpson who owned WQKR-AM in Portland taught me early on that ecomomics with mom and pop businesses dying and corporate giants not buying local AM radio like they once did is a major factor. Ron was great at making automation work, made it sound local, all on a budget. The owner has to get off his can and do it himself/or herself, not paying out to 20 & 30 year olds, who want to just sit on thier can!

Very well said, small stations MUST do what it takes to save a dollar. These kids that are coming out of Vol State and other so called "Broadcasting Schools" around the country getting out here and thinking, I can sit on my butt, playing CD's, music out of the computer, and making a living. BZZZZZZZ....WRONG ANSWER!

Your IT skills are more important, in addition to your knowledge of sales. If you are in a situation working for an owner of a small AM or FM, you have to get out there and bust your butt to make it work, or the station fails, period!

May I add if your fully automated, satellite or MOD, they now have companies that can override your automation and put on live weather alerts AND do them as often as necessary!

<<<Don't hand me that it is cheaper to PAY warm body to sit thier can babysitting the board than to put the station on satellite. YOU MUST BE OUT OF YOUR MIND! Look at what the broadcaster saves when the station is on satellite, and it's one less person to pay!>>>

Rock, I see you're point and should have been clearer on where I was going with that. I am speaking specifically for WVNS and the signal in Davidson County proper and the effect of the ratings now vs. The Party before it died a long, slow death. I am referring to the
fact that if you have a live and local show (and sadly you and I both know there IS good available local talent, not seat warmers
with no talent) for $10-$15 a hour. Wish it wasn't the case, but it is. Right now the station bills virtually nothing after 7 PM. I am
referring to the pure garbage they attempt to feed into the three remaining listeners that are masocists and enjoy dead air, two spots
running at the same time or imaging and spots running DURING the rather sad music being played. Could they find a better source
from a satellite? Hell, yes. IT does sound like you're comment about Vol State already. How in the heck can anyone be dumb enough
to buy advertising on crap like that --- or have the ability to sell any real $$$ ads? It's a lost opportunity and a lost cause at this point.
John King can't get through the red tape to make this station not sound like market #2546. It's a joke. I was saying, put on a decent
(better than 97.1) person from 7-12, clean it all up and certainly they can sell 2-$25.00 spots an hour making them profit, albiet
little. It will help them succeed in other dayparts, as well. A win-win. I completely understand your situation in Sumner Cty and NO
you don't need a full staff, nor could you afford it. Do you think your station sounds as bad or worse than V-102 at night? I doubt
you'd ever stand for it because you know it's lost revenue opportunity. In V-102's case that satellite feed is costing them a potential fortune...and them thinking it's saving them a few dollars is a flawed perception. I hope that's clearer. Probably not.

Again, I don't have any issues with satellite programming that's done right. The type that sounds good to listeners, provides advertisers a
viable product and V-102 is just the opposite in every way. And, I see where Rock later posted about WQRK in Portland. What you're saying
there is no different than what I believe. And, I did work at WQSI in good ole Portland....and it was a disaster in every aspect, but we managed
to pay the bills when I was there, which, by the grace of God was a shocker! And, I have total respect for you, lash and Paul for having the guts
to fight all the obstacles of small AM's! You'd been gone long ago if you had to pay to park butts, I agree with you totally there.

<<<From the looks of your comments above, you have never ran a station before! Arbitorn ratings and market #'s mean nothing when it comes down to the accounting/accounts payable of a station!>>>

Dead wrong here, sir! My success has always come from programming damn rockin' good soundin stations with 50kw to 100kw FM
signals that usually kicked everyone's butt with hi-energy and almost always live and local, except sometimes 12M-6A. But, you and I
will always disagree if you think for a minute that ratings, numbers, popularity and a strong image and name don't matter. And for the record..anyone who listens to accountants to run their business is going to fail to be all they can be. Again, I am looking at WVNS as
a underperforming property that, if I owned it, would NOT be limping along like it is. I'd tweak and change it til it's right. Product vs.
Profits is a stupid way to run radio. It's fleeting. Every second lost is $$$. I am sure the accounting side of WVNS is not all that busy..
except maybe forking out tons of red ink. The accounting dept. is a distant third to the programming, marketing and sales department.
I call that Product = Profits. Accountants scare me...even ones in cheerleading uniforms, but I digress...

<<<Don't tell me you would rather have some Vol State student in there than have a professional announcer from a satellite service. You must be a ACLU cheerleader!>>>

Not a chance of that. I say, in V-102's situation they need a professional announcer from 7-12 instead of THAT (or most) satellite
service. If they choose to be cheap as always, then at least get some listenable feed on the air or just turn the crappy digital signal
off and save even more money.

Most importantly, I do like most cheerleaders, but the ACLU ain't team one I'm willing to support, just the opposite...I'm not sure I'd know
exactly who or what I'd be looking at. Yuck! That's hitting me below the belt to throw that accusation out. ;D Rock-On , sir! Keep fightin'
the fight.

Ok time to jump in! We do both! We're live all day until 6 pm, and then go to the network. And indeed, there is a right way and wrong way to do satt. I've never heard ROCK's station, so I can't comment.

But Scott, you need to just make that transition to Bright AC. Dump the oldies! Never heard of anyone in a LOOONG time airing two different formats.

I think you said that to me once before!
