(courtesy to XMFan.com)

10 New Music Stations are to be added by april 17th

On March 1, we added two new commercial-free music channels, Big Tracks - XM 49 devoted to Classic Rock from the late 70s onward, and XM Chill - XM 84 devoted to Chill music. Starting on Monday, April 17, XM will add 8 more commercial-free music channels. The new channels include:

U.S. Country - XM 17 - Country Superstars of the 80s and 90s
Flight 26 - XM 26 - Modern Hits 90s & Now
XM Hitlist - XM 30 - Today's Hit Music
enLighten - XM 34 - Southern Gospel
XM Liquid Metal - XM 42 - Heavy Metal XL
Big Tracks - XM 49 - Later Classic Rock
The Heat - XM 68 - Rhythmic Hits
Escape - XM 78 - Easy Listening
XM Chill - XM 84 - Chill Music
Viva - XM 91 - Latin Pop Hits

New Regional Talk & Music Stations (provided by CC)

In late spring/early summer, XM will add six regional News & Talk channels (XM 134-XM 139) that will, for the first time, provide regional news coverage for every area of the continental US and complement the recent addition of acclaimed Cincinnati, Ohio talk channel, WLW - XM 173. These channels will be provided by Clear Channel Communications and will be located in a new category on our channel guide called "Regional News, Talk & Music Channels."

This new category will also include Clear Channel programmed music channels Nashville - XM 11, Kiss - XM 21, Mix - XM 22, Sunny - XM 24, plus WSIX - XM 161 (launching soon) with acclaimed country personality Gerry House live from Nashville. Please note that Clear Channel will start carrying commercials on these music channels in May, so they have been grouped separately from XM's 69 commercial-free music channels on our new channel guide.

Regional News, Talk & Music Channels

XM 134 - Northeast News & Talk
XM 135 - Southeast News & Talk
XM 136 - Middle America News & Talk
XM 137 - Midwest News & Talk
XM 138 - Northwest News & Talk
XM 139 - Southwest News & Talk

> Escape - XM 78 - Easy Listening

Stupid name, but I'll enjoy two channels. Now if I can just find software that will record and split the tracks properly off of AOL's streamed version.

> New Regional Talk & Music Stations (provided by CC)

Can you say settlement? I knew you could. As far as the superstations go, they will almost certainly all be AM dominant news/talkers, with interruptions or inserted shows to deal with national talk shows that won't grant permission for satellite.

I sense they will get AM-quality bandwidth and probably sound about on par with the throwaway Canadian talk content on XM now, which is essentially unlistenable.

How inventive.

Perhaps I am reading too much into this, but "Sunny" is labeled as "Beautiful Music." Notice "Escape" is labeled as "Easy Listening." Will my hope for a slightly more contemporary easy sound come true? Probably not, but I can hope. I still have a hard time believing both stations are going to have the SAME EXACT playlist. <P ID="signature">______________

so will these be relays of CC stations ? If so anyone know which stations for which regions ?

You're being too kind. Even AM-quality is better than the pseudo-faux "stereo" they're trying to give these AM mono talk stations. It sounds like Bill Cunningham's in St. John's Cathedral, with the doors open.

> > XM 165 Ask changes to Talk Radio

Note to self: Go back, major in marketing, get hired by XM. Next task: re-image receivers as "Radios". Charge a bundle for rights to name.

And WLW's sound quality is positively high fidelity compared to the current sound quality of nearly all of the other XM talk channels, which are being squeezed into ever diminishing bandwidth.

Here's a hint - if you're a host with a name with a lot of "S"'s in it, don't say your name on XM's talk channels! Unless you want to sound like someone punched out a tooth or two...

It all makes sense now, though...they started squeezing more bits in preparation for the onslaught of all the extra channels next month.

I wish they would add a channel similar to Sirius's old "Vacation" channel (Trop Rock, Calypso, Hawaiian, Reggae, Soca etc.) I always thought "Escape" would have been a great name for a Vacation type channel. Too bad that's not what it is going to be. I'd much rather have it than another Easy Listening/Elevator Music format.

Unless you were part of the format, the two descriptions are almost certainly interchangeable with the marketing people. XM has licensed the same library Sunny is using. The only way they could make it more contemporary is increase vocals, because as I've written elsewhere, there isn't a huge supply of contemporary instrumental renditions of pop music anymore.

Well isn't radio margaritaville on Sirius close that "Vacation" channel?
I know several people who have bought Sirius just for RM..

Radio Margaritaville vis-a-vis Vacation (and a possible Sirius channel-lineup-change trend)

While I suspect Sirius thought Radio Margaritaville would replace Vacation, the two are different (to my ears, at least).

I'd like to add that both streams were/are in the second or third tier of streams I like but don't always get to because there's so much else on that's worth listening to.

When I have tuned in to Radio Margaritaville, though, my impression has been that of a station format similar to AAA, albeit with an understandable (and welcome) Jimmy Buffett fixation -- at least when it's not replaying actual Buffett concerts.

Vacation, I seem to recall, played lots more calypso, Hawaiian and the like. I also suspect it played less Jimmy Buffett.

This actually points to a possible trend I've noticed, in which Sirius replaces one stream with another that's different, but (Sirius presumably hopes) not so radically different that many people notice or care enough to complain about (or something like that).

Last autumn, Sirius dropped Folk Town and added Coffee House. (The two are not the same, however.)

And a couple of years ago Sirius dropped a new age stream and added the Chill electronic channel. (It's since started up another new age stream, Spa 73, but thankfully has not deleted Chill. No such luck with Folk Town or Vacation; maybe Sirius will bring back the formats sometime, though, as it did with new age. As the old saying goes, "Hope springs eternal.")

(By the way, I intend this post to go specifically on the XM board, as I am replying to an XM board post. That said, I'd like to cross-post this to the Sirius board, as it is obviously relevant there as well.)

Marlon Taylor told me he is programming Escape and it will be programmed exactly like Sunny.Either way I now have 2 b/ez stations to listen to.I'm extremly happy about this.Sunny stays number 1 in my presets and Escape moves to number 2.What you hear on Sunny now is what you will here on Escape however they probebly won't be playing the same song at the same time.I'm hoping not anyway.
