compliment or insult?

does the board/dance community here feel this is a COMPliment :)
or an insult ?
-
when an "obscure" group (ie: 3rd party) records, "waiting for tonight"
and it doesnt get any attention - but then "J-Lo" covers (or ?steals) it,
and it wins accolades, grammy's, etc...

Is it the established artist ( say, pitbull searching "obscure" dance
songs), ie: nightcrawlers, and "cashing in" ( in this example), by
no means are the N'crawlers "obscure" but if any DJ played
"push, feelin.." on prior to that release *better* have been in
a club that recongizes that killer track,
-
I just find it frustrating - when "my" group or sound
struggles to break through for more to enjoy,
then some one like slim shady, or beyonce
(ie: major!lazer) takes it on as their own.

Now, i know its a business , as the nightcrawlers
WONT mind getting paid for a track they recorded
(nearly 20 years ago) and get pd. for a song
that has been shelfed for the most part at least 14 years ago . . .
(except on way back shows) , and even then ... doesnt
seem to get a lot of air play
-

OR,
does the lesser known dj/producer or dance act embrace
the BIGGer artist asking them ( or sometimes just taking)
the lyrics, sound, etc,

dont need to start a war here, lol just a "im curious" kind of post

I tend to agree with you. Some say "any Dance" is fine. But, when mainstream supports
"known" artists, I think the pure Dance artists end up suffering. We've gone over this before
on several threads here without reaching a consensus. Kind of like the glass is half full, half
empty stalemate.

COMMENTARY:
I tend to think (-)negative, while the
dance artists may see it as a "WOW"thank you,
(for taking the time) not only to know my music,
but artistically interpreted it as their own; but

here's the downfall:
when the avg. 22-year old, part of
the mainstream has a thought like:
"wow, some cheap no name group
rips off beyonce for a song" (refering to major lazer)

as it will almost always occur in the reverse, the
mtv. crowd will "google" the new _ #artist's song
and "discover" the new hit single versus the dance Hit
(mashup) either on youtube. or on iTunes/filesharing sites
when they find out about the "original"
when others post if u like that song, or the reviews/comments...
u will enjoy ( the dance/artist)'s version...
then check this out

Let's face it...undercutting or "resurrecting"  has been in this business for decades.  If ANYONE sampled or "stole" any track, you are going to have to go back a good 25-50 years of when THAT original broke out.  What's old is new, and it doesn't matter what genre it is.  How many times we heard Lady GaGa ripping off Madonna?  Or Madonna ripping off Marylin Monroe?  You can't deny that we even sampled songs from the past.  Perfect example, Vinylshakerz & Rico Bernasconi sampled Murray Head's "One Night in Bangkok." Chris Willis' "My Freedom" sampled Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr.  Hell, Hyper Crush's "Fingers Up" is sampling "Derb" and that's in it's own genre.  As far as the feeling of compliments or negativity, I say take this as an advantage!  Go with the flow of this new trend because dance music is reaching it's peak.

In the interest of accuracy, that was a cover, not a sample. The entire song was re-done in its entirety.

The pop rock group Big Time Rush has recently sampled "Music Sounds Better With You" BY Stardust. It's all around this year.

Sampling & Remixing is the heart and soul of Electronic Dance Music of every genre. (Mashups are interesting, but don't really count as a remix or sample I don't think.)

But pop covers will appeal to the mass's because the mass's listen to pop. Just gotta accept that and hope that:
A) Permission was given by the original artist. or...
B) People catch on quick enough where the samples are from, and take it for what it is.
