Conan releases statement

I'm interested to see what the final settlement will be. Hmmm

Maybe he can go back to the Simpsons and help return the show to the quality it had when he worked there
 
My guess (and this is just a guess):

Conan gets a development deal (and weekly show) with HBO, and has the last laugh with critically acclaimed comedy series.

Jay, Dave, and the rest of broadcast's late night staples will continue to lose audience to basic/premium cable and other digital delivery methods.
 
Here's excerpts from an interesting comment by Tim Goodman, the San Francisco TV critic (link below):

"What's particularly NBC about this whole thing - meaning, how can it get worse? - is that Conan hasn't been this funny these past few nights on "The Tonight Show" since he started. He's on fire right now with his well-placed rage. That reiterates to his fans that the old Conan from the late night slot, who had dulled his edges somewhat since taking over "The Tonight Show" he reveres so much, still has the chops to slice and dice the funny. This only increases his value to Fox...His creativity has been reignited. And Fox knows that if it can get THAT Conan - on a network that wants him to be loose and irreverent - it could have something special."

Can't feel sorry for him. Conan just did not draw the numbers...he lost HALF of Leno's Tonight Show audience. Letterman beat him even in the in younger demos. If someone hires him it would be at fire sale prices.
 
I liked Conan's statement. Very serious with some comedy mixed in. I agree with him: the Tonight Show is an institution and belongs in the 11:30 PM EST slot.

This is a classic example of NBC trying to have its cake while eating it too.
 
Somewhere in the great beyond.....Johnny Carson is probably laughing at this entire mess. That's what NBC gets for not making Letterman his replacement in the first place.
 
I think the "Team Conan" topic on Twitter is stupid!
Most of those people don't even watch The Tonight Show.
If that was the case, then the ratings would be higher, wouldn't they?
He can't draw numbers!
Jimmy Fallon's been on for a little longer than Conan and he's already developed a very good show, along with topping target demos and sometimes overall at its time slot.
Conan had trouble holding on to that on his 14th year at that slot.
NBC just wants to fix their mess before they get any worse.
 
Here's what's stupid ...

If he walks, he walks with a $20-million-per-year buyout of the 4 year contract years remaining.

If he goes to Fox, NBC must pay the difference in what he is offered by Fox. If I was Murdoch, I'd offer him a dollar, and let NBC pay the rest.

He doesn't need the work, not for a severence package like that. Is he holding out? No, I don't think a development plan with NBC, even, would do it -- but maybe the Fox deal and an HBO deal might have merit.

I think NBC would want Leno back in late nite with Conan's already losing half the audience. However, Leno knows that "Tonight" is more than a 30 minute "franchise" and I'd be surrised if he took it. He may just take his $20-million for one year if that's what it was,) and go do stand up for awhile, then move to ABC. Don't think he'd be the draw Conan would be on Fox.

I think Conan goes to Fox with a development deal and the same deal he got from NBC, with the Peacock paying for it, and Fox picking up the development deal. Conan could become an owner of the syndication rights of such a project, including a late night show, ala Carson and Letterman.

NBC is in deep voodoo. They have to pay up one way or the other.

It's funny, I was watching the tail end of the the 20th anniversary Simpsons special from Sunday, in which Conan O'Brien rambled for a couple of minutes about the show. And in my mind, I was thinking, I would not be surprised if this was not the last time I saw Conan O'Brien on FOX this year.

People keep quoting Conan's ratings as if there wasn't the same ratings dropoff when Jay Leno took over from Johnny Carson full-time. There was. It's not an isolated occurrence by any means, and it's still too soon to declare O'Brien's tenure a failure because of it.

I think the "Old Conan" would work at 10:30 (11:30 PT/ET). I never ever understood why network suits think acts like Conan, and Letterman before him, have to change their schtick to perform an hour earlier. Look at what's on in prime time these days. Compare "Kojak" and "Medical Center" of the 1970s to "CSI" and "House." The modern shows are touching on subjects and are more daring than ever. So why does a show that comes on AFTER prime time have to all-of-a-sudden become vanilla? Letterman's NBC show was better not because he suddenly lost his chops (he's still very good), but because he was HIMSELF. I like Dave in tennis shoes and that show would work at 10:30. The same is true for Conan. Let him rip and be Conan, not the vanilla host of the old Tonight Show. FOX, as the SF Chronicle guy stated, ought to get him and let him loose. Hell hat no fury like a TV host scorned... or something like that.

Ferguson didn't win "more often than not" -- I think he won a couple of weeks toward the end of Conan's run on "Late Night." The trend was definately in Ferguson's favor, but Conan still won "more often than not."
