I filled in for Stewart Brodian on WDIY tonight. It's a no holds barred alternative show. Undoubtedly the most boldest show on the station. I brought with me the CD , Neutral Milk Hotel who are not together anymore. They pretty much had a brief existence and all the members are still active in various bands under the organizational name Elephant 6. It's an arts collective and they all live in a commune type arrangement in Athens GA. Anyway, NMH has a cult following. Im one of the fans and there is a growing subculture around here who know who they are. So, I decide to play the song King Of Carrot Flowers pt. 2 which is quite wild. The song starts out with the singer Jeff Magnum screaming that he loves Jesus Christ and then he spazzes out and the song gets real heavy. It's almost metal but there's trumpets, xylophones. and other wind instruments in addition to guitars. Anyway I get a phone call from some sanctimonious sounding snooty guy who seems to be criticizing me for playing "Christian rock!" While, the singer is praising Jesus it's not really a Christian song. It has a number of meanings. ANyway I dont have to justify why Im playing what Im playing and if you dont understand it then dont call me! I told this man to stick it and hung up on him. I refused to answer calls for the rest of the evening. Chances are it was him calling back. This may be unprofessional but who cares? Im tired of these idiots calling me! Just dont call me anymore! No matter what station! Dont call me! I play my music. You dont like it then pound sand!
 
i don't consider neutral milk hotel christian rock, but who cares if it was. tell the atheistic caller to get a life and put on 'zzo if you are too religious for him. after all, remember zzo's promo that they hate religious freaks. sounds like the perfect station for him. don't worry about it pickle. i had my share of fun hanging up on idiot callers back in the day.
 
Strictly to play Devil's advocate, pardon the pun, but simply file under "don't push your religion on me". Whether they are Christian or not, it does not matter. Two ways to stoke people is mentions of politics or religion. If the song would have screamed "Bush Sucks", this person probably would have been grooving along with your show and woul dhave never called. It's sad, but it's just the facts....
 
i never thought of a single song as pushing your religion on someone, considering u can find religious undertones in everthing from u2 to soundgarden.. but sure.. take your 20% of the publics side...

but i think the big miss her is.. pickle.. don't get your panties in a bunch over one caller.. i find it rather disappointing that u let it upset u that much that u didn't take phone calls all nite because of it... that's cutting your nose off to spite your face... your listeners are your lifeblood.. and whether its good or bad criticism.. its still interaction and a chance for you to shine. if it was all him callin back.. the hang up button is easily accessed enuff.. but what if 10 of the 15 calls were people wanting to know where they could hear more stuff like it??? at this point you'll never know and u lost a great opportunity to market your self... remember the people your tryin to market too are not on these boards.. (that's abundantly apparent lol ) thier out in the general public who's oppinion is the one that really matters

One step further: your request lines only represent, AT BEST, only 2% of the entire listening audience. Dude, get a grip and don't let one pigf---er hamper your show.
 
Responding to this more than a year later, the guy who called is a notorious gentleman who contacts all the djs at WDIY and nitpicks about everything. I will not mention his name here as it would not be appropriate, but all WDIY folks know who this man is. He provides comic relief to everyone. We have grown to tolerate his antics and actually are amused by them.
