WMZD, the former WMCD at 100.1, was sold by Communications Capital Managers to Tama. Included was a CP to increase power to 100kw (Class C1), with a city of license change to Rincon. Tama was leasing space on the WWNS tower in Statesboro (where 100.1 has always operated), but there was a time limit on the lease. Supposedly, there was enough time for Tama to construct a new tower near Groveland, Georgia. Apparently, Tama didn't get it done, so CCM required them to vacate the tower when the lease expired. With no tower site, they were forced to go silent. Tama has now filed for a modification of the construction permit, requesting to downgrade to (remain actually) a C2, with a transmitter site near Pooler...maybe one of the towers on or near Hwy 204. From this new site, even with 50kw, they will have better Savannah coverage than they would've had from the Groveland site with 100kw.
If Tama hadn't played games with CCM (changing the calls to a VERY similar WMZD, and programming an almost identical format to the one that WMCD had), they might've been able to extend the lease. My opinion is that Tama was going to try to use confusion in the market, to try and retain some of the former WMCD business, which CCM was planning to move to 107.3. Tama's plan backfired, as practically all the business did move to 107.3, and they were kicked off the tower.
