Confusing 12/5 in sports talk

Very confusing day, this past Wednesday.

First we had Steve Duemig claiming that when the Bucs made the Super Bowl in February 2003, he appeared on NFL Network for the very first time that week.

But the NFL Network didn't debut until November, 9 full months after Duemig claimed he was a guest on the network.

------------

Then I turned into Todd Wright and listened to him and Monica discussing Bryan Adams concerts in the 1980s, and then Todd talked about going to the recent San Diego Chargers-Cincinnati Bengals game.

Now, I could be wrong, but I thought that 98.7 was a Tampa-based sports talk station.

I'm not sure what Bryan Adams concerts have to do with sports, nor what Chargers-Bengals has to do with the Bucs/Bulls/Lightning/Magic/Rays.

I guess 98.7 flipped formats and is now either a adult contemporary station or a San Deigo or Cincinnati-based sports station that I was able to hear thanks to weird atmospheric conditions carrying their signal down to the Sunshine state.

For whatever reason that's how The Fan rolls. They seem to want to do a national style show on a local level. Pay attention to their updates. They will lead with some national story almost every time, even when there's big news in Tampa. As for Todd, he's most entertaining when he's taking time out of talking sports to bash the other talent on the station. He literally took the first 5 minutes of his show one night to point out things that Booger and Herrera don't know. It was freaking awesome. I've given up trying to figure out what the plan is for 98.7 because it's obviously not providing a good product. They launched talking about being local 24-7 and have never once done that, and even when they have live and local talent it sounds like they couldn't care less about Tampa Bay. The only thing in Tampa they seem to treat like a priority is USF. 98.7 hasn't been bad, it's been pathetic.

It really seems like Todd didn't want to do the job he was hired to do, which was to team with Booger. If that's the case, then I have to question why he took the job at all. Certainly trashing your fellow hosts is just something that I wouldn't be happy about at all if I were in a management position. Hacksaw Hamilton made a career out of feuding with his co-hosts in southern California, but Hacksaw has always been a loudmouth gasbag (I actually am a fan of his), not someone who's tried to place himself above the usual talk show chatter. Todd's been a square peg in a round hole from day one (no personal attack meant, just an observation).

I don't think there was an issue from the jump. There was an incident that, depending on who you know, was born out either Booger or Todd being absolutely crazy. I've heard it both ways, and don't know either guy, so I won't say it's the fault of either. All I can tell you is, if you track down the story, you'll get a hell of a laugh out of it. It's one of those, how the hell do two grown men get into bullshit like this, stories.

SportsRadio in markets like Tampa cannot live on talk between two grown men and/or callers with no life dissecting the Tampa 2 defense in football, the dump and chase in hockey, or when to pitchout in baseball. Not going to happen ratings wise, and ironically thats what Todd Wright was known for in the 90's.

SportsRadio in these markets is now Sports, Entertainment, Pop Culture. Born and bred from Yahoo Sports. There are NOT phone banks full of men itching to speak volumes on when to blitz and when to drop back.

And in case you haven't noticed, the NHL is on strike, and baseball is in the off season, and more people want to whine about the stadium, than who is going to replace BJ Upton. A handful of people here like the NBA.

I'm old school and back in the day you could get away with nothing but x's and o's and we all thought Jim Rome was the antiChrist. Todd drops names, places and you have to admit the man has a lot of miles under him, and does come up with some intersting stories. If he's a bit full of himself, well gee, is he really the first one? (I ignored the Duemig remark, because we've known about that for years)

If you're looking for WFAN, New York, then go to the HD3 spot. This is Tampa Bay, where man cannot live on the Tampa 2 alone. Deal with it.
