Confusing.....

My friend says he is a "professional" DXer who have claims he had received a HD station (FM) in Australia. Are there HD stations in Australia?

Australia doesn't use IBOC. They use DAB. DAB signals overall are far weaker than analog signals. Your friend has to have a DAB radio to get any authentic Australian digital radio signals. And fat chance of finding those all the way up here. DAB is extremely spotty in Sydney and Brisbane locally, so I can't imagine those signals realistically finding their way up here.

However, an American public station may be running Radio Australia on an HD sub-channel. Radio Australia offers it's programming through PRI and I've heard of public stations running Radio Australia or other ABC Australia networks on their HD sub-channels - wish they'd run Triple J!

The word "professional" dx-er indicates that he is being paid by someone to sit there and listen to the radio. I highly doubt that this could be true. So, I would discount anything he said, after using that word.

Maybe we should start a professional DX league, kind of a league of our own.

Naturally, with Nike sponsership of the PDXL, we would have our own pre-DX warm ups to wear over our DX hunting uniforms. Of course, our unis would have some kind of patented fanny padding for those long nights on the trail of a rare catch.

I'm off to Beaverton to pitch my idea, but I won't forget you all when the royalties are being paid out.

This could be bigger than Leisure Suit Larry.

How about a baseball team too. The Dallas DXers...... We could go up against the Texas Rangers and win the World Series! ::)

However, see the posting later on about having received an American HD station in Australia.

No one here has thought of AM...perhaps it was the 50kW KMIK 1580 Radio Disney in Tempe, Arizona the Australian was referring to...it puts out quite a fat lobe in its night pattern to the southwest, kinda sorta in the direction of Australia...

From the HD Board where the Australian thread is....

"Hi

KMIK & KBLA were both huge tonight. KMIK was flashing the "HD" logo. Even a faux CALL SIGN came up on the display!!! "OFMN" was displayed instead of "KMIK" - so at least I got some sort of PAD data, even if not correct

receiver: Sony XDR-F1HD HD radio / 200m longwire

dxer2_2000 @ Numeralla NSW Australia (100km or so south of Canberra)"
