Confusion over WKTU's format

I was talking with a friend in Miami the other day.
We were talking about Power 96 in her market.
I told her that New York doesn't have a "Rhythmic CHR" station.
She then asked me "isnt KTU a "Comtemporary Rhythmic Station"?
I told her that KTU is Where the 70s and 80s live. It's Rhythmic Adult.
She was shocked. She didn't know that Donna Summer had taken over the station.

"Had taken over"?

More like never left!

Though, to be fair, KTU did once play more newer music than it does now. It's pretty much a Hot AC with a rhythmic lean to it nowadays....they're even playing Duran Duran!

KTU used to be a dance station. The period in 2003 when they didn't stream was the best format. KTU slowly started sucking more, and they have abandoned dance in 2005. Blame Whoopi for putting the final nail in the coffin for dance on KTU. Pulse87 will soon sound much better than KTU sounds now.

KTU used to be a dance station when dance was a viable format with real hits;
how many big ticket, big market stations in America are 'real dance ' stations in 2008?...............................(sound of crickets in the background)...

The problem stems from several radio companies owning too many stations. There's plenty of dance hits however; most are overseas.

well, there were plenty of punk rock hits overseas in the late 70s and plenty of brit rock hits overseas in the 90s; none of them meant anything over here to a US audience, and neither does the current crop of new dance;all it means is to change the station when the hip hop stops...

WKTU needs to get a clue and bring back a "real" dance format. Right now, they suck.

Clear Channel should sell the station to another owner who can flip the station back to what it was in 1996 and still make a profit. What sucked was the fact that KTU added crap and other R&B music and that made the station anchor in the ratings.

When KTU was dance, disco and latin freestyle, it reached a 7.1 in 1 year.

John Benitez
Glenn Friscia
David Morales and Def Mix
Armand Van Helden

They were the best mixers who helped bring KTU to the top.

I also am mentioning RuPaul...<That was talent

Correct me if I am wrong.

Totally. But CC is afraid of stepping all over Z100 and Power, even Lite. That's why you have KTU now playing Donna Summer and Duran Duran...they're trying to figure out what to do without taking listeners from their other stations. Ah, the joys of deregulation.

KTU was playing plenty of current dance tracks not too long ago; the problem is, none of them were actual 'hits', except on 'dance charts;that's when their ratings problem began, as I recall

Would be nice if FreeForm WFMU 91.1 FM here in Jersey City would play Dance music on Saturdays. Pulse 87.7 has such a BAD SIGNAL.

Tony Santiago, have you tried to contact PD/MD Brian Turner about this?

Personally, I think Pulse 87.7's signal is a lot better than people seem to want to give it credit for. It covers the five boroughs, Westchester, Nassau, Fairfield County, and carries further to the north and east of those places as well.

A lot of folks just seem to want to write the station off before it even starts. Sure, it doesn't have a full-power Class B signal, but it carries a lot further than most suburban Class A frequencies around here.

I am having a difficult time picking up 87.7 on my home stereo and I'm right across the Hudson River in Jersey City. It's real fuzzy.

I will have to listen online.

I thought we're supposed to listen on our microwave ovens; why don't they put the signal on hd radio?then all the dance fans will have to go out and buy one and revive the economy

Hot97 is a Rhythmic CHR even though it has a Heavy Urban lean.

KTU is Rhythmic AC

I can try! Give me a number :)

And regarding Pulse...it's not their problem regarding the signal. That has to be communicated to the FCC and THEY (Mega Media) would have to be the one to file an application for a boost of signal. Then again, they COULD do like Party 105 did with the 101.5 frequency and acquire another LP signal somewhere in perhaps Bergen or Essex County to help boost their signal further.

Their signal sounds decent in Bergen,Passaic, and part of Essex County, but once i cross into Morris County I lose it. So I can hear them for half of my commute to work. Better than nothing I guess.

Except that a translator (like the 101.5 in Plainview) can only rebroadcast another licensed FM signal. It can't rebroadcast the audio of a TV station, which is what Pulse is licensed as.
