Congrats to US-97 for their great numbers in Hot Springs and also to Kicker 102.5 as they continue to be the leader in Texarkana!

If you look up "radio powerhouse" in the dictionary, I wouldn't be surprised if you found a picture of U.S. 97 along with the definition. They are obviously doing a lot of things right. However, the rest of the U.S. station line up didn't so great. The classic rocker was down sharply in 12+ and the A/C did nothing in 12+ despite some high profile (possibly high $?) additions. If I had a cluster in Hot Springs or wanted to get in and make a splash, I would make a run at U.S. 97. It's one of those situations where they almost have nowhere to go but down. Not to say they are ripe for the pickin's, it's just that the country music audience is definitely the biggest part of the listener universe. It's sort of like the old joke about robbing banks "because that's where the money is." A new country station wouldn't have to necessarily beat them, but say they took away 5 points of the 12+ rating. That would be stronger than a lot of stations and in a zero sum type game, it would knock down some of U.S. 97's aura of invincibility. So along with the well-earned congrats to U.S. 97, I would suggest that someone is sooner or later going to make a run at them. Just the nature of the beast. They're good, they've earned their success, but no one runs unopposed forever.

I think Congrats are definately in order.  They have taken a sleeping giant and brought it to life.  As far as taking them on in competition....well competition is always healthy.  But, as we have all seen from the past if you can't walk the walk don't talk the talk.  Whoever takes them on will have to have their ducks in a row and a product that is worthy and should be prepared to spend more money on the station than on anything else in their lives.  Taking on giants is big business.  We'll just have to see what the future holds.  Anyway, kudo's US97.  We're glad to have you doing so well.

I feel I should also address the other horses in the US Stations stable. STAR 96 has gone through changes and yes the new talent is sounding better and better each time I am in town. As we all know ratings have to be built they don't happen over night. I think they are on the right track.

I guess you could say the same thing about Kicker 102.5 -- no real competition. Anyine who plans to take on a "powerhouse" will need exactly the same thing....a matching amount of power and talent. That's the radio world.

I think the other U.S. Stations are still in a growth mode. Give them some time -- they will move up the ratings ladder. I'm very impressed with the management there.

Great numbers, I RECKON! When I saw the previous book, I thought it had to be a fluke; they got lucky, nobody has numbers like that! Well, the second book is even better than the first one--so if it IS luck, it looks like they're making their own.

Well done to some of the hardest working folks in Radio!

This is one of those things that goes against the saying "Things in life never come easy". When you have a HERITAGE country station in a market that has no competition, it is easy to have these numbers.

I think the owners of US Stations deserve a ton of credit. They spent money on a station that does the work by itself. And it especially helps when you have a legend like Tom Duke. Tom has always had the talent and lovable personality to be in a top 10 market.

This could go many different ways.
What if US Stations put a little effort in the other stations they own? Naturally that is going to take points away from US97.

What if US97 had a local competing country station?
I am not saying that US97 would lose its #1 slot if it had competition, but we all know the numbers would be somewhat different.

Another thing that "stumps" me is that the point had better numbers than the Rocket! Could anyone share with us why that would be?

Can't argue about taking on a powerhouse. The numbers show that a second country station in Hot Springs could be viable, but if it isn't done right, it can turn into a money pit.

Time will tell if the other U.S. stations are on the right track. In today's environment, though, management isn't giving as much time for growth as they used to. Hopefully everyone gets a fair shot, but....time will tell....

D'OH!!!

Shoulda said CONGRATS to KKYR 102.5 in Texarkana, too! But I just take it for granted that they have Great Books! Kinda like Sun Rises In East, Superstation Wins Again...

US Stations losing another Big Hitter, Bob Gibson!

What's going on there?

Bob is simply scaling back on his work load and will be acting as a consultant in other areas. He is at the time in his life where he wants more time with family.

Please dont' try to make anything else out of it. Please...find a hobby.

Wow...so people really do retire from radio. I thought it was just an addiction until death. LOL!

It looks like to me that someone is jumping to conclusions!!! I think it is fair to ask why Bob is leaving without being told to, FIND A HOBBY!

As for Bob,
I am truly thankfull that I was able to get his insight on radio. I wish that a few people that I work with now, were able to work for Bob. I never had a problem asking him a question and getting an answer. To me, that means a lot in Radio, especially when you deal with a ton of ego maniacs that have a hole that goes straight through one ear and out the other.
