I know this is a bit late, but I just learned about it a couple of days ago!
Congrats to Mike Grimm, formerly of WMT on getting the Minnesota gig!
Mike Grimm was hired by Learfield Communications on Tuesday to serve as the play-by-play announcer for Gophers men's basketball. Grimm replaces the duo of Dave Lee and Steve Thomson, who called home and road games, respectively, the past two seasons.
Grimm, who had worked as a sports host at KMOX in St. Louis since July 2001, will partner with analyst Kevin Lynch for the broadcasts on WCCO (830 AM) this season. He was one of three finalists for the job. The list included St. Paul Saints play-by-play announcer Kris Atteberry and Lynx radio broadcaster Brian Sieman.
Grimm also will handle pre- and postgame duties for Gophers football broadcasts, as well as serve in other undetermined roles.
Grimm began his broadcasting career working for the Iowa Hawkeyes Radio Network, which also is run by Learfield. He served as the fill-in voice for Iowa men's basketball from 1993 to 1996 and was the play-by-play announcer for Iowa women's basketball from 1999-2001. Grimm was named the Iowa sportscaster of the year in 1999 by the national sportswriters and sportscasters association.
Grimm also spent time in Minneapolis serving as a program assistant for Twins radio broadcasts on WCCO Radio. A graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, Grimm is from the Cedar Rapids area.
