That shows how desperate listeners are for someything to listen to....Sunny ain't that great and they play a lot of songs that are waaaaay out of format. Somebody experienced in next-gen oldies needs to come on the air and kick their ass from here to......wherever!

Mediawatch....wow

You people are amazing, a station starts doing well and you start tearing it apart. Go back to your job at enterprise.

Congrats Sunny...good job.

So, you're saying that Sunny is more focused on their format than Cool (or Big) was? You're saying that it's playlist is right on? You're saying that the line-up (all of it) is top notch? You're saying the imaging and the programming elements are the best they can be?

If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, you have a lot to learn about successful, strategic programming, my friend!

No one said that. No one said they were great. All we did was congratulate them. It so far as been a success. I don't agree with what they are doing with programming, but in only two books they have beaten WMMO, at least 12+

of course they do, why? because they're living a life in denial and anger...they refuse to UNDERSTAND the way that things are, and refuse to UNDERSTAND that some things are out of their control, and instead of congratulating, and learning something, they will continue to hate on things they way they are now, instead of learn what is happening.

Mr. Mediawatch...perhaps you could explain, then, what successful, stragetic programming is. Maybe you'd like to give us examples of your work in the past to go off of.

Seems to me regardless of your input about lack of talent/playlist/blah blah, Sunny is doing fine! Want to know why Sunny is successful in Orlando? just look to the bottom of the 12+ numbers, and you'll see WPOI, 101.5 The Point, out of Tampa with a 0.5...it looks to me like this station is the ONLY non-Orlando based station appearing in the Orlando book. It seems to me that while all of you complain and moan about how bad XL is and how terrible everything is compared to "BJ105" or "blah blah blah retired station #2", you are failing to realize the music played on your cherished old top 40 stations of yore, IS BEING PLAYED ON STATIONS LIKE SUNNY AND THE POINT! HERE IS THE MUSIC YOU'RE LOOKING FOR. HERE IS THE MUSIC FROM YOUR HEYDAY! Maybe the reason you all are continuing to compare and complain about stations is because YOU AREN'T A PART OF THEM!

and you know what, that's not CBS, Clear Channel, or Cox's fault...so stop belittling stations that are obviously becoming successful...

and for the record, you can pool me into the "people who complain because they aren't part of the station (anymore)" after this next statement...

When was the last time the call letters WJRR...finished behind the call letters WOCL? Folks at CBS are probably ecstatic with their decision to flip ORock...and entertained with all of the banter about what you all think about the station.

i've been writing this post for the last 3 weeks, always rereading to the end and realizing, eh, these guys don't care what a kid says...hell, they don't care what anyone says! But really...enough is enough already...a big ole WTG Sunny!!! They, and the format, deserve the results they're getting.

Has anybody also considered the possibility that WMMO is impossibly fossilized?

I worked there more than 8 years ago. The last time I was back in Orlando, the station sounded positively frozen in time and creativity. It was still the same jock line-up. Still hte same sweepers. Still the same positioning statements. They could have recorded a year's worth of voice tracks back in 2000 and just rerun them for the last 8 years. Who would notice the difference?

Sometimes a station wins not because they're doing so well, but because the other guy is just really bad.

I agree with BillCross. Why would you compare a victory by Sunny 105.9 over WMMO a great achievement? Cox music stations are bland and predictable. They didn't used to be that way but since Cox trimmed the budget and has ruined so many of their top stations it's become commonplace. If you're lucky as a Cox PD, you might get one music test per year. Even with that, you'd better play the exact list, song for song, or risk your job. I'm not a fan of satellite radio, but when you hear stations that sound like that you drive people to satellite.

I travel a great deal and hear a LOT of radio stations. When compared to a successful "Classic Hits" station, Sunny sounds boring. They overuse their recorded sweepers. The jocks (with the exception of one), show no on-air passion for the music. It's liner card radio! A great Classic Hits/Oldies station has a lot of personality and creativity from the jocks. I don't hear it on Sunny.

When you compare Sunny to the old Cool (from a personality standpoint), COOL wins hands down. All of the jocks on COOL interacted with the music, and each other. It sounded off-the-cuff and like they were having a great time being on the air.

So, okay Sunny, congratulations. Your victory over WMMO was history-making ;) But don't expect to be a long-term solid player in Orlando unless you fix all of your problems. If you don't think you have problems, well, that's part of the problem!

Congrats to Sunny 1059 indeed. I have been listening to them alot on Sunday afternoon out by the pool. I think the station sounds better now than it did when it first started. I have to agree with what you guys are saying about WMMO. I think that station sounds just like it did back in 1990 when it first came on the air. Both stations are actually quite good in their own merit. It is too bad that WTKS sucks so bad. "Drunky The Bear".....what the hell is that crap!!!!!!

Hey, whatever happened to Miss B on the Phillips Phile? I also remember just before they went "real radio" they were like a hot AC station? Is talk on FM done, or just gonna languish towards the middle/bottom of the heap?

Well, I know of a Miss B on Star 94.5 (WCFB). Last thing that I remember, she used to work for 102 Jamz. Is this the same Miss B you're referring to? If not, pardon my mistake. :-X

Considering all the live shows hit #1 in the M25-54 demo, I'd say FM Talk is doing just fine.

I'm siding with Bill Cross on this one. Plus, here's my overall opinion on the whole Spring book...

CBS and Sunny 105.9 caught a break. Of course, when a new station comes rolling into town, everybody's going to listen to it. It's a station that constantly has upbeat songs that are soft rock n' roll, some oldies, disco, and motown. They ARE songs that everyone knows and loves. The question is... how long can these songs keep the listeners tuned in? When is there going to be a point when their rotation gets stale and old? They were smart to sign on before the summer. Why? Because all of their music is upbeat and perfect for the summer. I'm curious to see how Sunny fairs for the Fall book. It's a tough time when a lot of the veteran stations are running Christmas songs (i.e. WMMO and Mix). I'm sure Sunny's got something hidden in the wispy clouds for the holidays.

Whatever the case may be, Sunny will spike in numbers for another book or two. Eventually, though, it'll even out with the rest of the stations in the market running a similar format. The benefits that I see with Sunny isn't predominantly the music. Technically, they're running the SAME songs as WMMO, a couple from WHTQ, and even some old-school R&B from WCFB (Star 94.5), with some Bee Gees, KC & the Sunshine Band and some 80's mixed in. The benefits will be 1) their new giveaway of $5K Gas Giveaway and 2) Brenda Matthews on the air. Gas prices are high (no duh!), so it's a no-brainer there. WCFB already has that through the Tom Joyner Morning Show. And with Brenda (Matthews) on middays, she's a veteran to this area and everyone loves her.

In summary, Sunny will spike, possibly, one more book. Eventually, it'll even out with the rest. I side with Bill on this one that it's no great achievement that they beat WMMO. WMMO has been doing the same thing since 1990. Yes, that's true. However, that's what makes it WMMO. It's unique, plays the SAME songs everyone likes (without talking over them), provides the same at-work environment, along with free concerts 4 times per year (and some great concerts at that). Musicwise, it's a better variety, like they've been mentioning lately in their liners. It's the 60's through today. MMO diehards continue to listen to them. Will it seem stale to some? Sure. But, once again, when a new station enters the O-town house, everyone wants to find out what they're like.

It's just like a new craze. Just like the Barbie doll, the Rubix cube, and the Nintendo DS, people will enjoy Sunny 105.9 for a little bit... until they get tired of it. Then, it evens out with the rest of the market. Big whoop. I'm certainly not trashing Sunny 105.9. I'll give them a kudos for succeeding this book. I just wouldn't bank on them kicking WMMO off the face of the O-town earth just yet.

In sampling this station in all dayparts I just feel that they're musically off. I think that they have already peaked. There's just no real excitement in this radio station.

Sorry. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Sunny will certainly need to always continue to tweak the music to stay strong. But gentlemen, go and check out the Daytona book as well. Huge spike for Sunny in that market. The station is hot, and we'll see if it has legs.

WMMO hasn't sounded great since Cary Pall programmed it. You call it legendary now, but he was the man who built it.

Agreed. 'MMO is a snooze-fest. Same ole same ole since the early 90's. If I need just music, I have an iPod. For me to put up with spots and other clutter, I need something -- or someone -- interesting between the songs, and there's precious little of that in this town. Certainly not on 'MMO.

1250, this is very true. I wish that I had the pleasure of meeting Cary Pall when he was PD for WMMO. This is where I need to be honest and say that I've only been in this Orlando market for 5 years. So, I truly can't say what should be right or wrong.

Please understand that any comments that I make are just my opinions (as well as everyone else's, of course). However, I respect everyone's comments on this topic. Just yesterday, I decided to take a listen to Sunny for the ride home. What I find amazing is that ALL of the songs they're playing are WMMO songs. The only difference, once again, is that they mix some perky oldies, motown, disco, and 80's. Plus, it DOES sound more lively because it's the old-school way of DJ'ing (i.e. ramping songs, talking outside of the normal liners, etc.). We'll just have to wait and see. For now, I'm going back in my traffic hole in the ground. :D

Sunny 105.9 still needs some adjustments, but it is still pretty good. Hey, it could be worse. At least they do not have an awful morning show with a bunch of no-talent jocks clowning around or an out-dated angry old dude on in the afternoon that thinks that he is a chef.......

I agree with billcross, too. WMMO's music is alomost the same as sunny's but it's just liner radio. You can't say you like one jock's style better than the one before-because everyone just reads the same liners. And, you're right-the same people have been there for YEARS! It has been the same everyday for the past 10 years and their idea of 'making things fresh' is changing a liner--that everyone will say!

How about some new bodies there-and live chat (it's pretty much all voice tracked) with shout outs to listeners and personality!

I listen to sunny for the music and delivery
