Congratulations Jerry Hanszen and KWRD(AM)/Henderson!

Congrats Jerry, you are the only one that I have ever seen that saved any of the Russell stations. You are to be commended sir! You are indeed a great broadcaster!

I second that, kogo.

I personally think that alot of the bigger east Texas broadcasters need to take some lessons from Haszen, and learn not only programming, but also sales and community relations. This guys is the master in Carthage, Henderson, and Marshall...and he deserves to be! But there is no reasons that his concepts cant work on the big stations! Get back to the basics local, local, local!

At the recent TAB Convention, Jerry led a discussion on doing local sports and how to sell them to local sponsors. It was terrific. Most of the ideas were simple, but completely overlooked by bigger broadcasters. Since he was kind enough to share some of the things that work for him, maybe some others will try them too.

If anyone should be teaching how to sell sports, Jerry should. I remember when I was the GM at KWRD, and he just owned KGAS. He called me to see if we were interested in sharing audio for a Dixie League baseball game between Carthage and Henderson. I politely declined. He said "Okay. I'm just trying to make my summer money."

I later had the privilege of working for him, even if it was for a short time. If I ever had the opportunity to work for him again, I would.

Well Thank God that Hanszen had the money, patience, and love of radio to preserve that 1955 Class D AM radio station in a small town. Again I am thrilled for Jerry Hanszen and also as thrilled that Jerry Russell is COMPLETELY out of the radio business!

I wonder what happened to Phillip Bur and Larry Fuzz that were fighting the license transfer?

It's amazing, alright, and this particular nugget from the MO&O was (and still is) very puzzling to me:

[Jerry] Russell responded to the question...regarding his other broadcast interests by checking the box "N/A" but including an Exhibit 5 stating, "Assignor believes it is the licensee of KOFY-AM, [Gilmer, Texas]."

Its sad that someone couldnt get KZEY and save it before it was too late! that was a really neat little station.

Agreed. Not to mention it being somewhat of a heritage station in Tyler.

It is my understanding that Frank Melton (formerly of KLTV) loaned Russell the money for those stations (to try to get another african american into broadcasting), and he took Frank's money and WAY over paid for those stations. Then didn't have a clue how to run them, starting losing money and panic-ed, he tried to lease them out with options to own, but that failed so basically to "screw" over Melton he turned off the stations and turned in the licenses . By the way Russell was given as part of all of the sales the property for the transmitters (and studio for KZEY and KWRD) and he refused and said he would lease them for the tax benefits. In reality he did it so that there were no tangible assets that Melton could take posession of and make him look bad!

"Screw unto others before they screw unto you."

Sad that the Golden Rule has morphed into something as twisted as this.... :(

Again I take my hat off to Jerry Hanzsen for saving KWRD! He also bought and saved KMHT AM/FM from Russell. 3 stations saved 10 lost!

Ditto. Too bad he couldn't have saved KZEY (or even KOFY). Would be interesting to have seen what he would have done in a "larger" market such as Tyler.

Some of the methods that Hanszen employes works extremely well in the small towns, but it might not work in Tyler and Longview. Afterall he does have KPXI which gets into both Tyler and Longview, beu he focuses it on Henderson and Rusk county.

Ha Ha, I can see it now... Jerry Hanzen buys KNUE... just the obituaries segment would take an hour!
