Congratulations KGO

Milestone: KGO marks 30 years on top. Citadel's KGO has been the top-rated station in the market for 120 consecutive ratings periods, running from 1978 until today according to the just-released San Francisco ratings. GM Mickey Luckoff says "We truly have the most loyal listeners in the country." The next challenge comes this Fall when San Francisco converts to electronic measurement.

Some may take KGO for granted (many of us in Buffalo-Niagara Falls do the same for Niagara Falls), but it seems pretty impressive to many of us back east. One only wonders how long KGO will maintain now that Citadel has their hands on the controls.

Until PPM "currency" takes effect officially with the first book in October, I predict. It will be their's to lose, once the PPM kicks in. Something tells me they'll catch the wave ... and we'll see in October. Welcome to the PPM!

Numbers this time, in the last diary book ... the worst KGO has had in 15 years at least, if not longer. Demo numbers not so good, either. Old and fading. Only a .5 of a lead in the low 5's this time around.

Congratulations on 30 great years, KGO! It's been quite a ride.

Nice to see someone, albeit someone from across the country, pay tribute to the unprecedented success of KGO radio.
Most stations would love to be #1 for one book. KGO has not been beaten in 30 years.

Curious if those who read and rant on this board take KGO for granted or don't consider KGO a radio station, or just have no appreciation for really provocative, intelligent, adult radio.

Believe me, after the locusts finish with local radio, the only surviving species will be stations like KGO that have a way of winning without playing old music.

I wonder how many stations will fire personalitirs, alter their music or even flip formats due to PPM?
Will the first result be considered a fluke? Or will it take 3 or 4 measurements before things start to
adjust? Juss wundrun?

First, stations have had as much as 6 years to study the results in PPM vs. the diary. Many stations have made adjustments already. A good case is WOGL in Philly which moved from oldies to classic hits based on early testing of PPM in that market... the move strongly inproved the PPM results.

Each PPM book covers 28 days, and each successive book uses most of the same panelists, so expecting change after the first real release, for September in SF, is not realistic. If you do badly in one monthly, unless you change something, the next one will be similar. since the meters are being carried by the same people.

Obviously, formats that don't do well in PPM, like smooth jazz, are going to be under evaluation before the PPM results start coming out. And supposedly more viable formats, like some rock derivitives, may be picked up in anticipation of the change.

If the PPMs are being used by the same people survey after survey, does this mean more accuracy or less accuracy? Would there be an effort to skew ratings to favor particular stations, say by setting the device next to a radio that nobody's listening to because the listener can't bear to hear "Hot Hits" go away, but doesn't care enough to actually listen to it? Or is that really a worry?

Every market has a news talk station that gets big 12+ numbers. This may be due to extremely high levels of listeners 50+ (Buffalo has WBEN AM 930, not quite #1, but consistently top 3, Persons 12+ and no, I don't work there, in fact, there are some components of the radio station that I loathe.)

It wasn't my intent to instigate, I merely thought that any station, regardless of format, that went 30 years (120 rating periods) at #1 accomplished quite a feat. I also wondered if the regulars on this board, ostensibly residents of the community, perceived a potential change given the station's "change of ownership."

Thanks to the ubiquitous Dave Eduardo for his observations regarding the impact of PPM on performance, which presumes technology may pose a greater threat to the station's dominance than any change of ownership could present.

One other thing to consider - several years ago Disney established KSFO as a place for their "right wing" shows. When they did their numbers dropped significantly. But it was an excellent move because it left them free to keep KGO live & local (some of KSFO is too). The combined ratings of the two are quite impressive indeed. Citadel still owns both, and I'm sure they sell them as a combo. True, the demos are getting older. But there's still a lot there and I don't see these stations losing money any time soon.

Jusst remember folks that it will take "30 More Years" til the year 2038 (and most likely NEVER if they do slip below number one anytime soon) for any other bay area radio station to match KGO Radios Run At Number One! Oh! BTW a lot of us will be dead before that feat ever happens again. So KGO will be "King Of The Hill" For A Long Time To Come! With a lot of pretenders to the throne in the meantime. I'll be 84 years old in 2038 if I live that long! How about you? Way To Go KGO!

David, Smooth Jazz seems to be doing quite well in Chicago, under the PPM.

It's not at all. Smooth Jazz WNUA is top 10 25-54 with the diary but only #22 in the PPM test.

In 25-54, the combined KGO and KSFO shares are still more than a point below KQED and also below the leading commercial stations, like KSOL and KOIT

YES, CONGRATS ARE IN ORDER BUT TO PUT THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE, KGO IS NO. 1 WITH LESS THAN 6 PER CENT OF THE AUDIENCE. STILL THAT MEANS MUCHO DONERO FOR THE STATION.

I SPENT YEARS AT KGO-TV AND RADIO BEFORE MOVIN TO VEGAS IN '95 AND TO ME THE STATION WAS ALWAYS THE 800 POUND GORILLA SO I WAS ALWAYS SURPRISED WHEN I MET PEOPLE IN S.F. WHO NEVER HEARD OF KGO.

MY FRIENDS THERE TELL ME THAT CITADEL IS LEAVING MICKEY(GM) ALONE. TO PARAPHRASE THE OLD JIM CROCE SONG...."YOU DON'T MESS AROUND WITH MICK"
