You are being handed an amazing opportunity ( if all the rumors are correct )
to increase the ratings of your evening newscasts.

I was hoping that true intelligence would rule the day at CBS news, but I guess not.

I realize that Bob could have retired already and that his current gig could not be viewed as a long term programming opportunity for CBS.

However, CBS is making a mistake.

She is very talented and is largely responsible for the ratings that
"Today" currently enjoys.........does anyone understand that the evening
news is a very different type of newscast? (duh)

I will give her 2 years before the CBS gives her a new opportuity.
If I am wrong ....I will apologise here in 2008 or 2009.

PS--NBC is a double winner........because if the rumors are true again....
they get Meredith Vieira........"Today" wins again.

Re: My Prediction

CBS will hype the hell out of Katie...the ratings will go up for a year or so...still not beating NBC...maybe beating ABC for a while. Then they will slide back down and soon people will be saying "Katie who?" When her contract runs out, she will leave and try to revive her carrer doing daytime talk or by joining a cable news channel.

Deja Vu?

All of this hype over Katie Couric reminds me of a woman that was hyped in the 90's.

Connie Chung, anyone?

Re: Deja Vu?

Or, even earlier, the hype over Barbara Walters on ABC with Hawwy Weasonew.

Which, if nothing else, led to one of the great David Brinkley lines. Walters started on ABC on a Monday. Brinkley opened the Tuesday NBC Nightly News with

"Good evening, and welcome back."

Re: Deja Vu?

Bob Schieffers last night in the chair will be the last time I watch the CBS Evening News. Sorry, Katie. I've seen your interviews on Today. The cutesy smiling coming off a tragic story....no. It wont work. Todays kids would call it ' no street cred '.

Sexist? Hardly. I remember Pauline Frederick, the first woman to anchor a network newscast. In her prime...before she went glizty and goofy, very few could touch Diane Sawyer. Even before the hype, Connie Chung had the chops...before sliding down that slippery slope of celebrity.....and, as much as we might pile on Baba Wawa, she was a legit journalist...again, before going hollywood......

I'm only in my mid forties, but I remember Douglas Edwards, Walter Cronkite...and before his dumb-a** antics, Dan Rather, set the table five nights a week for no nonsense, no hype journalism.

Not to shovel all the blame to Katie for the Black Eye at Black Rock....the decision makers there have appeared to come to their conclusions either through their loins or the "Mighty 8 ball".

What little is left of the tradition of CBS News is about to go out the window at Black Rock.

On the rare Sunday Mornings I have off, I will still sit down with coffee and danish to check out the last program with class : Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood.
