Connecticut Decade in Review

Thanks in part to my Memory and FYBUSH.COM - It took me over 2 1/2 hours to do and I'm going blind in the process.

2000

WTYD 100.9 in New London flipped from AC to Oldies as KOOL 101 WKNL in February, just months after 102.3 abandoned the format.

A dispute over unpaid LMA payments leads to a court-ordered eviction of El Principe Communications from the airwaves of WNTY 990. El Principe retaliates by damaging equipment, leaving the station inoperable from the middle of September until the end of September. At which point the station began stunting with a mix of R&B Oldies, Disco Music, and Caribbean Music until a new LMA could be signed. Southington High School Football returned to the airwaves as did the Sunday Ethnic and Religious Programming.

In mid-October BLAZE Communications signed an LMA with ADD Radio for WNTY. Blaze Communications would program the station 72 hours/week (6AM-6PM) as BLAZE 990 with Hip-Hop/R&B/R&B Oldies, and Caribbean Music all day Saturday. Blaze Communications is headed by former WNEZ JAMZ 910 PD Philip Duncan.

The Caribbean Music on Saturdays is removed immediately replaced by Sports Programming. The plug was finally pulled on BLAZE 990 in November after a DJ left the station in the middle of the Apple Valley Classic High School Football Game, eventually leading to a "phone off the hook tone" going out over the air until the GM came down and switched the station over to FOX News Channel, which remained on the station 24/7 (except for NCAA Football and Basektball on Saturdays and NFL Football and Ethnic Programming on Sundays).

MarcB: Where's the entry for the premiere of the Jay Clark show on WXCT?

You're also leaving out the flip from MOYL to GTO by WATR a few years ago.

Also, Diane Smith was let go as morning show co-host, and the morning show itself was also shortened one hour to make way for the expansion of Jim Vicevich's midday show.

But most importantly, 2008 marks the very first year in the decade in which nothing of significance happened at little AM 990 in Southington, for Marc to include in the above recap. Great job on it, nonetheless.

I couldn't remember if it was 05 or 06. I couldn't find it Scott Fybush's Y.I.R. I wanna say 05 because I think I was still working at the Southington Shaw's at the time and a co-worker of mine was doing the afternoon news before being replaced by the lovely Courtney Miller Rao around Christmas time 2006.

I forgot about her ouster because she often does fill-ins. Other stuff I forgot - the year WHDD 1020 getting a 91.9 FM signal, the year WNLC 1510 went dark. (Was it in 99 or 2000? Details of the year 2000 are sketchy because Scott Fybush's YIR is missing for the year 2000). Other forgotten stuff - also fWhat year Jerry Kristafer was out as PD of WELI and moved back to DRC-FM, what year WFNW 1380 flipped from Portugese to Spanish, what year WSUB 980 flipped from Spanish AC to Tropical becoming Caliente 980, and what year legendary Polka Broadcaster John Jeski died? Was it 06, 07, or 08?

March 2004, Pirate radio station WKDH-FM "Jammin' 99.5" closes FM operations and moves entirely to internet after many years of 24/7/365 operation, because the station operations manager/program director decided regardless of the desires of the owners of the station that it would no longer operate in powers exceeding the part 15 standard and would not return to the air until it was deemed that the signal was in compliance. (as of 2 months ago, the station owners removed the transmitter and claim to be working on an "upgrade", I don't really know what that means).

For the listings at CT Broadcast history (if they are watching): WKDH initially signed on as "Disco 102" (102.3 & 1350 AM) in 1981 from downtown New Britain, dropped AM and moved to 99.7 in 1982, shut down in 1985 and then settled on 99.5 from Middletown in about 1994? under the current slogan, and then became a network with a second operation on 99.5 in New Britain for less than a year in 1999. I'm not really sure how to work this into the format you guys have though.

I also notice that 101.5 from Hartford is listed, but no slogan, they are called "Energy 101.5" I think I even found the website somewhere (looking.... found!) http://www.energyradio1015.com

and CNX Radio claims to also be on 1710 am, but I live very close to it and have yet to ever pull it in.

I believe the late John Jeski died Aug. 19, 2007

That was Warwick, not Westerly. And who are these conspiracy theorists you speak of?

Isn't either! :D

Every extant YIR edition, 2000 included, is linked from the handy bar on the left side of YIR 2009:

Here's the link to the "missing" 2000 edition:

Hey, I'd never remember anything myself if I didn't have these linked somewhere to refer to... ;)

Actually, now Diane does fill-ins at 'TIC. I believe she's filling in for Ray Dunaway this week.

WNLC 1510 surrendered its nighttime authority in April 1998, signed off in November 1998, surrendered their licence to the FCC and had it cancelled as of November 3, 1998. Can you believe it's already been 11 years?

Also, on an unrelated note! I've been looking for some shots of their old 8 tower array, does anybody know of any floating around?

And you can get to it from the left bar on the 2009 YIR, too. I just checked that link. I promise it works!
