Connecticut Radio News for April 1, 2007

Buckley Broadcasting has announced the sale of WDRC-FM for $33.5 million. The buyer is Spanish Broadcasting Systems, who say they will flip the station to Tropical Format. SBS says the station LaGrande 102-9 will have a Reggaeton lean on the weekends. The format change will occur on April 2. They hope to obtain permission to use the WLAT-FM call letters. Buckley will hold onto the AM quadricast for now.

In response to the impendening format flip of WDRC-FM to Tropical and the recent elimination of 1230 AM WKND, 840 Broadcasting, owner of WRYM in Newington (licensed to New Britain) announced it will flip formats to Urban AC on April 2 using the moniker "FOXY 840 - The home of R&B Hits and Oldies".

Freedom Communications has announced the sale of its 3 Hartford area radio stations - WLAT 910, WNEZ 1230, and WKND 1480 for $4.7 million. The buyer is Davidson Media Group who owns talker WXCT 990 in Southington. WXCT alumnist Marc Bramhall has been hired as GM for the 3 stations. Bramhall plans on flipping 910 to Oldies - as FUN 91 and will be moving the station to new studios in the former ACME Auto Building on West Main Street in New Britain. Bramhall says he plans on moving 1230 and 1480 into new studios in a yet to be determined location in Manchester. For the time being he will have 1230 and 1480 simulcasting each other and has obtained permission from WXCT's Charlie Profit to simulcast his station on those 2 other frequencies.

Clear Channel Communications has announced the sale of its Hartford Cluster to Entercom Communications for $100 million. 105.9 FM currently known as The River will be flipped to News-Talk and will take on the WPOP calls. 105.9 FM Talk will pick up the NY Yankees from sister station 1410 AM. The River moves down the dial to 104.1, ditching the POWER 104 format and WPHH calls. Calls switch to WHCN. KISS 95.7 will be completely blown up and replcaced with a new CHR format under the moniker "T-95.7" WTEE. Wanting nothing to do with a stand alone AM, they are LMAing WPOP 1410 to WIHS 104.9 as they are awaiting the sale of their FM channel in an effort to raise more money. Once 104.9 is sold, the previous owners will be purchasing 1410 for $3 million. Meanwhile Entercom's 4 FM stations will be housed in a new building currently being constructed on the property of the former Southington Cheverolet Building at 500 Queen Street in Southington.

And that's the Conencticut Radio News for April 1, 2007.

Just curious, what's your interest in moving the intellectual property of WHCN to another frequency that has the same coverage... I seem to recall that coming up before. Of course, it's April Fools so it doesn't need to make sense.

Good one! You had me searching the trades for about 5 minutes, until I went back and looked at the date of the posting.

Didn't even phase me. As soon as I saw April 2 in combination with the word 'Spanish', I knew.

Very creative though!!

As an aside... and this is a bit late to be an april fools' joke, A few weeks ago, The Southington Observer featured an article interviewing Charlie Profit about the Thom Morgan show... They list WXCT as 900 AM in the othewise decent article-- not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES!!!
