Connecticut Ramblings

I was driving back from New Jersey to Boston today and wanted to comment on some of the things I noticed while driving through Connecticut this afternoon...

95.9 WEFX: Kind of a 'blink and you'll miss it' radio station, however I got them in driving up I-684 from White Plains, NY almost up to I-84 in Brewster. The station seems like a pretty middle-of-the-road classic rock station, however they've got quite some sound. I heard Grand Funk's "We're An American Band" and the cowbell on the song sounded effin' awesome! I was trying to get I-95 (the radio station) at the time, and came across 95.9 the Fox and said to myself, "Ahh, I remember this station." Speaking of I-95...

95.1 WRKI: Is it me, or is it that WRKI just has the worst transmitter location? If I look at a map, I assume that WRKI travels much farther and has better reception than it actually does. You have to be about 10 miles from I-84 traveling up I-684 just to get the station in, then once you get into Waterbury, there's interference from 93.7 WZMX. WRKI actually comes in decent on the eastern side of Hartford until you get to about Stafford Springs when it completely goes out. I know WRKI has boosters closer to the coast of Connecticut, but the interference from WZMX seems way out of wack. And I know there's a 1.3 MHz separation rule, but have no idea how it effects the two stations.

98.7 WNLC: Noticed they're not playing grandma music anymore. It's a classic hits station now. Interesting. Trying to forge a place between 104.7 the Wolf and Cool 101.

Other notes: The sound quality on Power 104 (WPHH) seems muddy. It was hard to listen to. Also, I'm not sure if this is a regular thing, but 97.9 WPKX was playing what sounded to be a terrible-quality download of Montgomery Gentry's "Hell Yeah." Do the jocks or engineers even notice this?

That's about it. WAQY and WCCC had the Pats game on. Not much else to say, but if TXengineer could shed some light on the WRKI thing, that would be great.

Well I don't think that's the case. The signal however isn't as good as it used to be when they were 50kW on the shorter tower. The height didn't improve much, in my own opinion. But judging from the fact you said you are hearing WZMX on your car stereo, makes me think your car radio might be having an issue. If that is the case, then it's possible your car's radio is desensitized making it appear that WRKI has a much weaker signal than they actually do. I frequently listen to WRKI when I go to Hartford, and aside from general weakness due to the mountains, it still comes in pretty good.

Yes, they do. I know that WPKX's chief reads this board from time to time, and CC Hartford's might too. They're both pretty good friends of mine, and I know they take their stations sound quality seriously.

I would have rather NOT listened to the game today.

Is that transmitter location the reason why they ID as "WRKI: Brookfield/Danbury"? As for Danbury stations, I had the Walkman on WDAQ-FM 98.3 ("98 Q") to see how far their signal would last on my Sony Walkman. I got them from about the Westchester/Putnam County line on I-684 north, through I-84 East in Danbury up until near Waterbury.

As for WWFX-FM 95.9 of Norwalk, I noticed how they proclaim to be "Fairfield County's Only Rock Station". Um, isn't Brookfield and Danbury in Fairfield County? Yes, they both are. Who chose that slogan?

The interference from WZMX-FM 93.7 ("Hot 93.7") was probably due to signal overload from nearby West Peak in Meriden.

Last, but not least, despite not making the playoffs, THANK YOU MIAMI!! Clinched a winning season after all! :)<P ID="signature">______________

Their studios are also in Brookfield. Its the city on their license.

I wouldn't be thanking Miami. They had a terrible year. If they made the playoffs despite their struggles then i'd be thanking them...

I'm well aware of that. 9-7-0 isn't all bad considering the terrible mid-season we had. I'm just happy they beat my arch rival (I HATE the Patriots). As for potential games on FOX for the Dolphins? They're hosting Green Bay and Minnesota next year. The Lions hosted New England on Thanksgiving in 2002. We weren't there in 2003. It's quite possible! They've only got Miami and Buffalo at home for the AFC.

New England possibilities for FOX will be when they host Chicago and Detroit next season.

Lastly, to get this back to Connecticut radio, is it known if WCCC-FM 106.9 will continue to carry the Patriots next season? Will the New York Giants get a Connecticut station back on their network? (They've been on WPLR-FM 99.1 before.)

I sure hope not! There's nothing worse than driving along on a Sunday afternoon flipping the radio on and hearing...football. There were times in the past when there were football games on WCCC, WPLR, and WAQY simultaneously leaving very little in the way of rock music on the FM dial. Football should go back to the AM side of things where it belongs.

Didn't WELI-AM 960 of New Haven carry the NFL in the past?

here are my ramblings for the day:

1. It drives me nuts when I drive back to northern vt on a sunday evening. the patriots are on like ever station I listen too.... wccc, 102.1, 101.7, 101.1 it sucks I because I wanna hear music.

2. wrki: I notice interference as well from 93.7 closer to meriden. ever try listening to a walkmen when someone else is driving? my car does not pick up much interference but it can when you are in the meriden area. why doesn't wrki get a relay in stamford? their station in greenwich is a mix-up mess.

3. any of you travel on 183 twards Great Barrington MA?
I notice a 4 market pile-up of radio stations I had a lot of fun listening to 94.5 boston vs albany, 103.5 albany vs ny... this list is endless anybody wanna go dxing in this area? Its gotta be fun what you pick up.

I remember the Giants used to be on WTIC AM 1080 and later WPOP AM 1410. Then for some odd reason WPOP switched to the Jets 4 or 5 years ago. (I know the Jets were on WCCC for one or two years before they became home to the Pats again).

And a few years ago I asked the GM of a certain *cough* suburban Hartford AM Station *cough* in Southington *cough* if he'd consider picking of the Giants and he said something along the lines of "Even if I was able to get the advertiser support for the team I don't want to alienate the people who listen to the Italian Show, Church Service, and Polka Show on Sunday Afternoons. Even if it is only about 10 weeks a year." (Figuring most games start with the pregame at 12PM the kick off at 1PM. And the rest are either at 4PM or 830PM on Sundays, 9PM on Monday or on a Saturday afternoon).
