Connecticut's CHR Overload

nd2023

Banned
In the area within the rectangle with corners in Bridgeport, Trumbull, North Haven, and Branford, you can hear 6 CHR stations.

Z100
92.3Now
KC101
Kiss 95.7
106.1 BLI
101.7 The Beach

Isn't that too much?

Not really, since only one or two of these stations - KC101 and maybe WKSS - would really consider the area you mention to be part of their market. Markets overlap in this densely populated region, so it's only natural to find no shortage of similarly formatted stations being heard here.

Imho I think so... NJ has 95.9 WRAT, 105.5 WDHA, and G-rock 106.3 & 106.5, and 89.5 WSOU....
What does Fairfield county have for rock not really anything....
95,9, 95.1 102.3...

and then there is all the Adult Contemporary stations... oh man what is there like 10?

I wish I could get WCCC down this way...

What does Fairfield County have for rock? A LOT
95.1, 95.9, 99.1, 101.9, 104.3, and maybe 102.3 on the shoreline in some places. You can get CCC in northern Fairfield...

The area has plenty of ROCK stations...

ACTIVE rock? Maybe that's another story, Jamie. :)
Listen online..........

G-Rock flipped formats to CHR back in January...If you check out the NJ Board you will see how many people are heated over this.

Sounds about right....Down here in Northeast NJ this is what you can receive in the AC department:
96.7 WCTZ, 97.5 WALK, 98.3 WKJY, 99.9 WEZN, 100.7 WHUD, 102.3 WSUS, 102.7 WWFS, 103.9 WFAS, 106.3 WFAF, 106.7 WLTW, 107.9 WEBE, 1300 WRCR....You probably pickup most of the same stations along with some that can't be received down here.

Remember though..the only STATEWIDE CHR's are KSS and KCI. A lot of these regional mentioned CHRs only serve their situated areas...Q105..WILI....98Q...etc Then the ones from other states that come in...50kw...that'll happen!

I guess if Clear Channel put 95.7 and 101.3 together that would take one away as they would be the same on two different signals. lol

Wasn't the post about CT Chr's? CT has 4, I 98.3, Q 105, Kiss 95.7, and KC 101. It would be nice if TIC did flip to Mainstream CHR, and force Clear Channel to do something about the stale Kiss 95.7. Life in CT is pretty sad when the best Radio in CT is out of State.

5.....KSS..KCI..ILI..QGN..DAQ..

each of them obviously have their own musical directions.....

But once again...how many of them actually cover a state-wide majority? .... 2

I'm shocked you think that......

It's hard to argue that Connecticut is overloaded with CHR anymore than your southern or midwest states are overloaded with country stations... many southern or midwest markets (far less states) have 2 or more competing mainstream country stations and possibly a classic country station or two. Contemporary formats are much more popular in the Northeast than they are in other regions of the country.... hence why the amount of CHR's that are in Connecticut can survive. I'm damn proud of the job we do at i98.3, to say the least.

Lets see how many AC stations we have around Connecticut.
Lite 100.5 WRCH
97.3 WZBG Litchfield
Star 99.9
WEBE 108
96.7 The Coast
WBMW 106.5
(by the coast you can pick up WALK)

Even in a small state like Connecticut, there are many different markets. You might get 6 CHRs, 7 ACs and 5 Classic Rockers on your radio in Meriden, Danbury or Colchester, but most are competing in different markets. You might get Hamden/New Haven's KC101 clear as a bell in Hartford, but they're not competing there for ad dollars. Brookfield/Danbury's I-95 can be heard in New Haven, but pity the sales force that wants to sell against PLR there. Hartford's WRCH and Providence's Lite Rock 105 come in nicely on a hill in Norwich, but WBMW is where local advertisers place their buys. Signals and formats in-state and from outside of CT overlap in this small chunk of real estate, but getting Fairfield County's WEBE 108 in Hartford doesn't get them much more than bragging rights. Is Star 99.9, WEBE and Coast 96.7 too much for the same local market? That at least could be a valid argument... maybe.

I miss being able to listen to I-98. You guys definitely kick everyone else's a** :)

BTW, WKSS and WKCI are NOT statewide (to whoever said that). You cannot receive Kiss in lower Fairfield County, for example and KC 101 is not clear in the Norwich area.
