Conservative talk teeters next to Fort Bragg

If WFNC switches formats, don't be surprised if they move the news/talk format
to FM, maybe to 106.9 and 102.3(If WFVL keeps their tower at their current
location) With 106.9 at 50,000 watts, it would be a good move, but even if
WFNC goes sports, they have to power down at night to 1,000 watts, where
WCIE is right now at 1450.
I think WFNC should stay as they are for now.

Does anyone have any information on how many diaries Arbitron distributes to active duty military personnel?

It's more "poor presentation teeters" than it is about "conservative talk teetering" when it comes to WFNC.

But of course when any liberal talk radio station runs into trouble, it's all about the ideology. :D

Nah for most of Air America and liberal talkers it's usually also poor presentation.
Which probably is a function of their ideology. The message is most important it doesn't matter how it's presented. And it needs to be presented 1000 times in the same way. ;)

younger troops listen to music, watch ultimate fighting, wrestling, etc

I repeat, does anyone know how many Arbitron diaries are distributed to active military personnel? Does Arbitron include the listening habits of anyone with an APO address in the ratings?

If Arbitron doesn't give diaries to active duty soldiers, then it doesn't much matter what the soldiers prefer to listen to on the radio, since they aren't being counted in the ratings, are they?

I think most troops live off-base at least at Bragg.
Even Bragg housing has addresses, not APO addresses.
So the diaries are just as likely to be going to soldiers here as to regular people with regular addresses.

Is that what you wanted, or do we need an Arbitron official to step in?

All I wanted was an accurate answer, regardless of the source.

WFNC is not doing all that bad - hardly any local talent to pay and shares that range between 3.5 and 5.5.

Aside from the military, Fayetteville is also a college town - home to Fayetteville State and Methodist College. FSU is a histroically black school with an NPR affiliate that brings in respectable audience sizes.

That, and the vast majority of the town do not fit the right wing profile. There are more urban stations in Fayetteville than in NYC. And the military does not fit the conservative profile no matter how much Sean Hannity says it is most certainly so.

APO addresses are not in the United States. APO is for DOD mail overseas (outside the United States). Fort Bragg is located in the United States. Thus the soldiers do not have APO addresses.

That still leaves the main question, which is "does anyone know how many Arbitron diaries are distributed to active military personnel?" That's the point that mattered.

Do you know the answer to that question?

North Carolina is one of the worst regions for AM radio thanks to the poor ground conductivity. Add all that sprawl and you have a situation just like Atlanta.

WFNC has a good signal (10 kw-D, 1 kw-N) on a low dial position (640) with a nondirectional antenna 24/7. Even with that WFNC may have signal problems in outlying areas after dark. Fayetteville has grown to over 100,000 as the city is required by state law to annex outlying neighborhoods.

If 640 ever goes all-sports the Limbaugh/Hannity crowd can always tune in WPTF-680 out of Raleigh.
