Construction Permit Issued for Channel 51

Yesterday George Flinn was issued a construction permit for Channel 51 in Jackson at 5000kw. I believe the plan is to place the antenna on an existing television tower in Raymond. Now, could Jackson please have an independent full power station?

This will probably be just like WBIH Channel 29 Selmsa, Alabama.............. second/third rate or run movies, poor picture/audio quality and lots of infomercials.

Actually, according to some of the engineering docs, this station will place its transmitting antenna on the same tower that houses WJTV Channel 12. They only have to add the studio, ST Link and the antenna. They don't have to build a tower, so it will probably be active within a few months.

Initially, it was going to be a full power Urban America TV affiliate, replacing LP 8 and 49, until UATV folded a few months ago. Now, it will probably be totally independent, since no other major affiliation exists. The question will be how long it will take to get it added to satellite locals packages once it is on air. I figure that cable companies will add it quite quickly.

surprised as hell it's an analog permit, given the fact that digital is supposed to be the only mode by the time the CP expires in 2009

Some of these have been filing to switch to digital shortly after receiving their permits. I would guess the application was filed years ago, before anyone really knew what the analog "drop-dead date" would be.

From what I can tell, you are correct as the proposed station dates back to 1996. But also their is a point that the FCC I figure will have to stop issuing any new NTSC analog station licenses as the time frame would be getting to close to the cut off date. (Actually I'm waiting for people to play the poor card and the fact that digital stations in some markets are not covering like the analog station signals to have analog extended for a few more years.... Don't know for sure, just speculating however)

Given that DirecTV dumped WXMS when they picked up WRBJ, I'll be surprised if 51 will be added at all.

All Full Power Stations, regardless of affiliation, are eligible for must carry. That is what the whole 2nd dish lawsuit involving Dishnetwork was about. Dish was trying to put the indies and the Spanish channels on a 2nd dish and the CSR were trying to talk customers out of getting the 2nd dish. Dishnetwork was required to carry the channels, but they were trying to place them in something other than the main package. This has been ruled illegal. The only reason WXMS was dropped was because of its low power. As you may know, Dishnetwork never carried it.

I always heard you needed more power for the higher channels but 5 million watts is really getting up there. Of course, maybe that's a typo.

5 Megawatts is the maximum allowable power for the higher UHF's. 2 thru 13 are limited to 100KW.

Actually, 100kW is the max for channels 2-6 (LoBand VHF). Channels 7-13 (HiBand VHF) are allowed as much as 316kW visual. Remember, of course, that the aural signal power is well below that of the video.

5000kW ERP is the max for UHF, but, remember, on UHF, antennas can be made VERY high in gain. 5 megawatts can be generated ERP with much less than one might think. Most stations of that power level have actual transmitter outputs of between 100kW and 200kW (which still makes for a whoppin' power bill). And, the stations must deal with signal loss between the transmitter and antenna (it is UHF, after all), but, that's another discussion.

As an aside, don't get too close to a UHF TV antenna with this kind of ERP. Dangerous.

The station could turn out to be like WPXX channel 50 in Memphis. They are on PAX/i, but they are switching to My Network TV during prime time next week. Apparently according to the schedules I found at Zap2It.com, the i programming will still be on the rest of the day. Now that i is switching to more classic TV shows, Flinn decides to start carrying the only network that could be worse than i before the recent changes.

REAL brilliant move Doc!
