Poodle....I was the General Manager of WKGC-FM when 1480AM was given to the College. I don't think it had anything to do with contest fraud....that was several years earlier and the licensee was found not guilty....the real reason they gave the station to the college was that they wanted to buy 590AM and needed to divest of 1480...it had a marginal signal (500w) and it was an easy and fast way to divest it so they could purchase 590....not to mention a hefty tax break :-*. I still have a picture (somewhere) of Dr Tyree (then President of GCCC), George Tapper (Chairman of the Board of Trustees at GCCC), the owners (Lindholm and McCoy dba Janus Broadcasting) and myself signing the papers to be filed with the FCC. Actually I didn't get to sign anything, just Mr. Tapper and Dr Tyree... I was just there for the signing ceremony.
As a sidebar, I was teaching Introduction to Broadcasting at the college when the FCC hearing was held about the contest fraud. I required every student in my class to attend the hearing...which were held at the city hall on Panama City Beach...they lasted 3 or 4 days....I was GM (and Chief Engineer) of WKGC from 1974 until 1983. Part of my duties was to teach one broadcasting class per semester.
