When you look at how many people stand in line to audition for "American Idol", you realize that when a radio station offers a million dollar prize that's also being offered by a hundred or more other stations around the nation, the listener's perception is that they just may be that lucky one. That's the listener's point of view. (I know this because my wife is a radio listener and she sets me straight on what listener's like and want)
However, from almost 4 decades of being associated with the broadcast industry I, personally, think it's a poor way to get listeners.
I can remember years ago when radio stations got listeners and ratings by their programming, their personalities, community promotions, etc. I've never been one to go along with 'buying' listener's rating points. But, it does seem to work for some, at the expense of those who really deserve the credit for their on-air efforts.
A station owner I worked for many years ago always told me he'd rather give away a lot of smaller prizes that one big one. He said, "that way I can make a lot of my listeners happy, rather than just one and pissing off those who didn't win that one big prize."
Even when I did have a big prize to give away, I always had a lot of smaller prizes, too.
