Continued "lies" can't kill it. Sorry guys. HD Radio passes one million

"Milestone: HD Radio hits one million.
Three years after the first HD Radio receivers arrived, iBiquity says it’s crossed the one million mark. VP Joe D’Angelo says sales should grow more rapidly as HD Radio chipsets have been shrunk to fit into MP3 players and other portable devices. An iPod accessory is set to be released this summer."

The truth shall set ye' free! Far from dead, HD continues to grow. Sorry, guys!

Question: If one declares HD "dead" in this forum, yet must return to continue declaring it "dead" year after year, doesn't that say more about the coroner than the so called "deceased"? If truly dead, the technology, the hardware, and the need for and activity on message boards like this, would all have long since, uh, "died". ;)

Agreed, at least for FM. HD radio may be taking off slowly, but it has a long runway. I can't wait for the 10db power increase.

Ah, I get it now: Reproducing a company's press releases now qualifies as "truth." Thanks for clearing that up.

Mike, what can I say. You're a true believer. Ibiquity should be glad, no grateful, to have you in their camp.

The press release mentions chipsets, so does the 1 million figure include chipsets or just completed units? Does the 1 million figure factor in returns or is it like some churches, which count a member a member regardless if the person changes religions, becomes an atheist or dies?

Help me out here.

From the subject line:
Continued "lies" can't kill it. -Wrong.
The HD cartel's "continuing lies" are, and have been killing HD Radio all along. Continuously repeated in promotions, news releases, and advertising these "lies" have been easily been passed on to far more then a million.

The HD cartel and it's allies have zero credibility.

WOW! Now, all iBiquity has to do is sell 799 million more radios to catch up to the estimated 800 million (and growing) analog radios already in the hands of folks in the USA.

Scanman suggests an interesting point:

By what ratio do old-fashioned NEW analog-only radios outsell HD Radios? I'll bet it's something like 100 to 1.

As I mentioned in the Sony XDR thread, documented production of RDS decoder chips now exceeds 200 million per year (most of which are going into analog receivers, cell phones with FM capability, etc.) yet by the most optimistic guesstimates, only 1 million HD receivers have been sold since the beginning of time. This would suggest that the ratio is even higher than "20 dB".

Try 1000 to 1. I think someone said there were half a billion analog radios in the US. That means that HD radios comprise approx 0.002% of all radios.

Does the 1 million number include all the freebie Boston Acoustics radios that were handed out... all the Kenwood HD radio add ons that were included in HD exciter purchases (I have two) and all the Day Sequerra modulation monitors sold to HD stations, not to mention the consumer grade radios HD stations purchased for PPM monitoring.

Smashing! :)

With Citadel, Cumulus and Entercom about to break debt covenants, and CBS and Clear Channel struggling to even stay afloat in the radio sector, and thousands of stations in the Top-150 markets that can't crack a 2.0 share and therefore aren't profitable.....tell me again why the thing we NEED as an industry is MORE competition? Mike, the technology is very much alive, but the consumer need is very much non-existant. HD radio is going nowhere. Sorry.

I had to wait until amazon got the sony radio back in stock they sold out of them quick. I like that radio it works good 84 miles out from Houston even with a dipole antenna!

Hit their first million! The Alliance must have used it's marketing budget to purchase hundreds of radios.
Everything else is corrupt, who say's the Alliances shoots straight!

Radio, and the Alliance must believe Ipods are the death of our industry. This explains the urgent appeal to have FM radio in everything Ipod. True Ipod users are seeking music, music they personally like made up from their custom playlist. Ipods with built in Fm/HD might boost HD's phony units sold numbers, but will it drive ratings & revenues? I have a small MP3 player with FM built in and I never use it.
On TV today the screen flashed Ipod input for new kia Soul

A Newspaper subscriptions with HD televisions won't help save print either.

More isn't better, it actually makes you and your brands weaker. A Chevrolet dealer on every corner, ya right, it forces everyone to starve Unlike HD television, HD radio and analog will live together for years, causing shares to shrink and fracture.

Meanwhile Ibiquity walks away untouched richer and happier collecting their fees.

Well, judging from a MUSIC point of view, HD should start getting some better music and more exclusive features AND have those features accessible throughout the ENTIRE country. What do you expect people to think when terrestrial radio is lacking certain sounds and formats, then they go to HD radio only to find out there is even less of a choice in some areas?

Yes, I'd probably tune in from time to time if I had HD onmy Zune or Ipod. I do sometimes tune in to the FM on my Zune, but that's ONLY because I already have a fascination with radio!

Oh- and one more thing; HD would come in handy for me since AM 550 KFYI is now HD. This is good because I can listen to Coast to Coast AM at night clearly at FM quality! That continues to tempt me to want to continue thinking about getting HD to some degree.

I've never understood why, given an 'adaquate' signal, anyone would care whether their favorite talker is on AM or FM.

And as for AM "coast to coast".....uh, no.

Coast to Coast is a show, I didn't mean I wanted to be able to hear AM radio from coast to coast...
It comes on over night when A.M. reception is bad...

AM-HD is hardly FM quality, that is a huge insult to FM. The highs are artificial sounding and brittle, AM-HD is unlistenable unless you have tin ears and really don't care about audio quality. It's akin to drinking soda with saccharine in it. I've done it for you, HD is a big waste of time irregardless of what ibiquity says, remember they're trying to sell this junk, they'll say anything whether it is based in fact or not, which has been proven over and over again in this forum. ibiquity gives car dealers a good name.

Be wise. Try it before you buy it. Go to a local electronics store near your listening location (if you can find one) and see if they even get the KFYI AM HD signal you want reliably at night on their demo HD radio. Many AM stations turn off their HD signals at night to avoid jamming their adjacent channel neighbors.
Most seem to agree HD Radio is far less then advertised. The AM HD audio quality and coverage stinks, is often intermittent and is full of encoding artifacts, and FM HD isn't much better especially on stations that lower their HD1 bitrate to make way to add HD2 and HD3 signals.

According to www.radio-locator.com KFYI drops power to 1000 watts at night and their HD power and coverage would be miniscule.

KDM 7000, as landtuna suggests, why would you care whether Coast To Coast is in analog or digital? What, is George Noory about to starting singing arias from "Rigoletto?"

(Let's pause for a moment to let THAT image sink in. Ewww...)

Anyway: if KFYI were to drop stupid HD and return to analog full 10kHz bandwidth and NRSC preemphasis, and you listened on a decent radio, if you were in an objective state of mind you would find the audio listening experience quite pleasing. And if KFYI takes actual pride in their signal and their processing, you would likely think it's comparable to FM (assuming you're in a quiet RF listening environment.)
