Have you ever worked in radio?

If you mean corporate radio, the answer is no. Corporate radio is why I have not been involved in the industry in almost 20 years now.

Point taken about the government having control of all these stations being a bad thing.

Raingus,

Back in 1992, I saw all this coming, I was working as just a jock on Nashville's (then) Urban FM, WQQK, 92Q. At the time, 92Q and it's AM sister station, WVOL-AM were co-owned by a local owner, Sam Howard. Sam was also had his hands in other businesses outside radio as well. Through conversations with Sam, and other GM's who worked for him, consolidation was on it way.
Consolidation was a way to keep stations on the air, especially in medium and small market, and not allow them to go dark. As I read articles and listening to discussions, the handwriting was on the wall.
To stay in the business, I went and bought me a small AM daytimer. It really doesn't make that much money, and I'm not concerned with that, as long as it pays it's bills. The most important part to me was "self satisfaction" that I got my own little radio station. So what if it's just 1000 watts, on the high end of the dial, with a signal like a little 250 watt station, the whole point is I got a little station of my own, I could do what I want, play what I want and have fun.
I had some stupid "non radio educated nut" try to tell me back in 1997 my station was worth 1 million to Clear Channel, as they were on thier big shopping spree. I laughed my butt off and I'm still laughing because today, as Clear Channel is falling apart & I'm sure my station is not worth much, with it's 1000 watts, that get's out like a 250 watt AM station, due to ground conductivity, who cares.
I got what I wanted, and no I'm not rich with a big house and fancy car. I don't wear suits, just blue jeans and t-shirts. Last suit I had to wear was to my dad's funeral in 2007.

Cool! I also owned my own radio station at one time, it was a 45 watt LPFM. I sold it to some guy down in Florida a little over a year ago. I had fun playing what I wanted to also, and it didn't cost me but a few hundred dollars for the transmitter. Finally like everything else my jukebox toy got old and I moved on more important things that are outside and beyond radio. I will say that I had no problems while I was in operation. ;D

As far as commercial radio is concerned, it got to a point where they could no longer afford to pay me what I am worth for my sacred wisdom, plus I was just too smart to continue working for the commercial radio people.
