Conventions...

Which convention do you find most valuable and why?

(listed in order of occurrence for 2008)

Al Peterson's NTS Aircheck

R&R Talk Radio Seminar

Talkers - New Media Seminar

Conclave

NAB Radio Show (September version)

I have not attended The Conclave before. Is there specific talk content there? One thing I like about NTS, New Media and TRS is that they are focused on the talk genre.

I will be at that convention next weekend. Remind me to bring my protective garb... ;)

None of them. It's the same old same old. Why not get some of radio's true heros like Bill Drake, Chuck Blore, and people like that who had a big effect on radio--in all formats--to come talk. Instead it's always some big name, who knows nothing about the biz of radio or it's a panel of talk radio blowhards who spew the same crap every year.

A few years ago at the Talkers New Media thingy I saw Walter Sabo nearly get booed and hissed out of the room when he dared to suggest that the industry was too full of itself and focused way too much on national politics.

So much for the talk radio industry.

So much for the New Media Seminar. (Though I personally like and respect Mike Harrison)

And so much for all the self-important blowhards who have hijacked the medium and brought about its near ruin...

Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed Morning Show Boot Camp (though that may have had as much to do with the Atlanta party scene as the actual seminars...) ;D

Seriously, though - I would recommend MSBC to any "talk" host I know. You won't hear a peep about the "important" issues. You will learn about entertainment and doing good radio. That's what it all about, regardless of format... 8)

SABO

Kind of Ironic that SABO called something too egotistical. That guy is the king of overhyping himself...

So NJ 101.5 is a success...big deal. Why doesnt lifestyle talk work anywhere else? WTKS in Orlando use to be a good station but Jay Clark is more responisble than Sabo. I never got why SAbo is so loved. He has tried to dumb talk down and over analyze the spoken word formats the same way Lee Abrams over researched rock radio. WAlt, I got news for you...You cant just take "Parade Magazine" and build compelling radio out of it. Personalities win...it doesnt matter what they talk about. The only way a station can be a "star" is if all the talent you hired are "Stars"

he might have been right on the issue, but just seeing his name makes me want to throw up...sorry for going off on a tangent!

Don't apologize...This board is full of tangents. It's what makes it worth reading. I kind of agree with you on Sabo, when I see his name on an agenda at one of these things I find something else to do during that session.
