Convert m3 to Wav and vice versa

One of our church folks uses wav files. Our playback program wants mp3. We ave no converter. Other times I need to go the other direction. Are there low cost converters out there?

freerip is a free software program that will do it.

Just Google it and you can download it and convert pretty much all files .wav. ogg orbis, MP3, MP4, etc.

Audacity will also do it I think.

The program you want is LAME. If you have Audacity or some of the other sound recording / sound editing programs, they will advise you to download LAME and it becomes something of a "plug in" to create mp3 (or in their legal view, LAME files that work just like mp3.) There is a patent or copyright issue at work here. To put TRUE mp3 into a recording program, an editing program or even a stand-alone file converter, the mp3 people charge a royalty.

You can download LAME and use it as a stand-along file converter. http://lame.sourceforge.net/links.php

What playout system are you using?

I believe he uses Simian.

Simian should be able to play an MP3 file...we do that all the time, e-mailing audio to the system, even automatically retrieving weather forecasts from weather bug.

MP2, on the other hand, will require adding an additional decoder to the basic Simian program. Ran into this when we bought a station that used WaveStation & had everything in MP2.

Simian does play MP3 files just fine. I prefer not using compressed files unless necessary in emergencies. If compressed a must, I prefer AAC.

Thanks for the comments. I like to keep Simian files in WAV and have many mp3's to convert over to WAV. Simian will not overlap mp3 and wav.

I have been using Jazzler show but it will not play wav. This is for the church shows.

The mp2 is another project. My automation will play mp2 but if I need to edit an mp2 I need to get a plugin for Adobe Audition.

Just so you are aware... when you convert back to wav from mp3 format, the original audio loss is still there and then picks up more artifacting in the conversion phase. Do this a few times and you'll have files with all the fidelity of a SoundScriber tape.

Are you sure about that? I had Jazler Show on my computer that died last year and haven't put it on the new one, but my memory is that ALL the files I had loaded into it were .WAV. I just now looked and their website says both .MP3 and .WAV will play.

as noted before, converting mp3 to wav is pointless.
Its like trying to take a cassette tape and convert it to CD expecting the quality to improve.

OH it will increase the file size exponentially, but the sonic quality will still be squat. Once the audio is gone, it's gone, no matter how you up-convert it.

MP3 is not multi-generational without artifacts galore. And many airchains have enough digital gear in them. So, BWF or WAV best for broadcast needs.

Hey Chief--

This is what you need:
http://winlame.sourceforge.net/ (download on http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/winlame/winLAME-2010-beta2.msi?download ) I don't actually recommend using MP3 for anything, especially if it can be avoided, but if you end up getting stuck using it LAME is the only codec you should ever use, and this programme is a decent front-end for it.

Just remember to always select "Custom settings" from the MP3 encoding presets, and from there set the quality (ctrl-Q) to "High", check the "Constant bitrate" box if it isn't already (ctrl-C) and set the bitrate (ctrl-B) to 320. Then hit "Next" (ctrl-N) and let it work its magic.

[size=8pt](F.Y.I. and caveat emptor: DB Power Amp is payware; something that should also be avoided where/whenever feasible. Winlame is free/openware.)

Here is a professional solution for you. The Jones Radio Network use to recommend it for audio conversion. I've used it many times and am very happy with the results:

Also, I second the recommendation for DBpoweramp. This program and the Imtoo audio converter mentioned above are both professional programs.
