Cookeville Wants Oldies On FM!

Cookeville listeners would love an Oldies station on FM. That's the response I've heard through the years just talking to people. "I wish we had a good oldies station here", they'd say. So I have to wonder why the chowder heads in upper management don't try it? What do they have to lose? More to gain I would think.

They are not a rated market anymore, Kicks 106.9 is a waste of air space, Magic 98.5 has become a former shell of itself. Lite Rock 95.9 has finally fattend up their playlist and stopped playing "Into The Night" by Benny Mardones as a new current in daily rotation, and what's sad is they are programmed by an out of state music service and jocks who track to sound as though they are local, lol. Gee what happens when tornados come? Do the jocks in Florida give tornado tracking reports in their voice tracks? "Take cover Celina" as they mispronounce it as Seleena?

So my question is... why doesn't one of these tired frequencys flip to an exciting fun format like Oldies? No you don't have to drag out uncle Terrell's old doo wop collection or mom's Connie Frances cd's but play fun songs that focus on Top 40 from 1965-1980. Hit those 40, 50, & 60 year olds that grew up with that music as current top 40. Your "Boomers" usually have money to spend, sales people. Artists like...KC & The Sunshine Band, Sly & The Family Stone, Bee Gees, Tommy James & the Shondells, Motown, Memphis Soul the Staxx artists, British Invasion artists, I could go On & On. A fun jingle package, jocks who sound like they are having fun! Excitement.

When the economy gets better and it will, something like this would be a breath of fresh air. Come on, wake up chuckle heads. You are not a rated market anymore, it's mainly independent owners or small companies there. Try something different for cryin' out loud. Nashville can't do it because they are rated and majorally consulted. They can't think outside the box, but Cookeville can. Or can they???

What happens when a tornado hits the locality where the satellite service originates? Do they go off the air, and leave local stations high and dry with no programming? Or do they have some type of backup plan for when that happens?

That's a good question Firepoint. You know it really amazes me how some management assumes the listener won't notice or is stupid to the fact that their on air staff isn't local. Maybe they just don't care. Listeners can tell when the dj's are voice tracked in from other towns. You just know by hearing them that they are not from around here. You never see them at remotes. Or even cheesier when a local dj tries to allude to the fact that they are on with the voice tracked dj from another area. I've heard that before too and you can so tell that they aren't even in the same room together. I agree Cookeville radio has lost a major edge since the 90's and even the early 2000's. There were some great sounding dj's that have come and gone through the years. There are only a few names left that have been memorable and they're on the country station. BTW what happend to McFly? Did he get another syndication offer?
I would listen to an oldies station here in town, I love the 60's and 70's music. Motown is great! :)
