Cooking a hotdog with an AM tower again, but this time in slow-mo

These two engineers have been making videos where they demonstrate AM transmitter arcing and RF burns using hotdogs. Now the Slow-Mo Guys (a channel that does what it says on the tin) have reached out to film it with their super slow-mo cameras. There's some pretty cool close-up footage of the plasma arcing across the surface of the hotdog.

High-speed, close-up footage at that.

Pretty fun to watch - and now know the reasoning behind RF burns.

Ow!

There is a reason I chose rfburns for a screen name!
And some of us have "souvenirs" of getting too close... even after 60 years. I have a perfectly circular little burn scar below my thumb and which I remember most from the smell!

I got a fun reminder of RF from a 5w HT. Accidentally hit the transmit button while I had my thumb on the bit that screws into an antenna. Felt like a bee sting at that small of wattage.

Considering most commercial operations run many multiples above that, it’s a bit like urinating on an electric fence…you only have to do it once to remember it for a lifetime!

I'm a member of the Thumb RF burn club too. Wonder what is the most popular spot or RF burns. The Back of the forearm area also comes to mind from leaning across a metal Phasor. Now I wear long sleeve shirts when I do that.
