Cape Cod had no Christmas station last year, but this year they do once again, and it's a new one, WCIB. I guess it's no big surprise, since they had recently made some adjustments to the format, adding non rock classic hits, and (I think) eliminating songs after 1990.
How sad that Cool has gone that corporate all-Christmas route. Cool's attitude has always been one that promoted its locality. Its music was unique, and its jocks were all-Cape Cod. But recent changes have made Cool sound much more like a corporate-run station. Its music has shifted from AAA to Classic Hits. It runs the syndicated Tom Kent on Saturday nights. And now, it has gone all-Christmas. Oh well.
Cape Cod had no Xmass station last year? Are you serious? every freakin station in the market played xmass music of some sort around the clock from thanksgiving on and several by xmass were 24-7 xmass music. the only thing cool did different this year than anyone else was go all xmass weeks before anyone else. in fact, TWO WEEKS BEFORE THANKSGIVING. that's the day I stopped listening and took them off the pre-set. dont worry, the whole market, like last year, will be all xmass very soon. Ugh.
The only way I would ever program xmass music as early as Cool did would be if there was a corporate sponsor involved. if you're gonna flip and lose listeners as a result, at least get some money for it. If not, why bother? I dont' care what you say, xmass music A MONTH AND A HALF before the actual holiday is not a cume or TSL builder. you're only hope is that retailers will play it in their stores.
Stations that go all-Christmas music tend to go for the spike in 25+ female listenership. It's a proven commodity in numerous markets. Why not go for it? If it's done correctly, it could lead to more agency buys. Mo money. Straight cash, homey!!
WCOD did not go Christmas last year, unless they did just a couple days before. In 2008, WCOD as well as 103.9 (as a stunt between Cape 104 and Cape Country 104).
