COOL 102 LOVES THE 60s

I've noticed a little more pure pop music from the 60s on Cool 102 recently: songs like Higher & Higher by Jackie Wilson & even I Got You Babe by Sonny & Cher. They've always played more rock-based 60s but now seem to be getting into actual oldies per se. They even run a liner saying Cool 102 loves the 60s. I think it's a good move since that decade is gradually being discarded by other stations. Between Cool 102 & Lite Rock 105 getting into some 60s (mainly Motown & soul), it looks like other formats are picking up music disappearing from stations that used to play it. I can't really hear any other Cape station, but wonder if it's a response to what else is being played down there when it comes to classic rock/hits & oldies. I'll be in Hyannis in a few weeks so I guess I'll find out.

In a smaller market where's there's less at stake there's probably less research, more gut feeling, and the result is a better mix of music.Providence is over-researched and in spite of some stations claiming what they do works their success is only a result of cluster strategies.

You've gotta love "the Class Reunion " with Ron Dwyer. On Sat, 8-12 , oh and Sunday July 2nd as well.

The two Cape stations that were an oldies simulcast, 93.5 and 101.1, recently went to a "Frank" adult/variety hits format, mostly 70's/80's/90's music. Also, WWBB "B-101" in Providence, which hits the Cape loud and clear, has dropped a lot of 60's oldies for 70's "classic hits" type material, so Cool-102 must be trying to fill the 60's void a bit.

On Sunday afternoon I heard them play Elton John's "All the Young Girls Love Alice" from the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. I can't honestly remember ever hearing this on the radio before, even back when the album came out in 73(?).

Talk about a Deep Cut!

Talk about throwing stuff against the wall and hoping something sticks. COOL 102 is trying to out-variety the new variety station in the market, Frank-FM. A little late for that, don't you think? COOL 102 isn't going to get it done by playing unrecognizable songs...songs that were never hits. At least Frank plays the hits. COOL 102 was caught with their pants down with the sign-on of Frank-FM and now they're trying to play catch-up.

Now thats just dumb.....first off Cool has been playing that song long before Frank came along....second, most Elton John fans know that song...its off the MOST SUCCESSFUL selling Elton album!....same way they know "Wasted Time" by the Eagles, or "Into The Mystic" by Van Morrison. People DO know other songs besides the top 100 wedding reception songs. I applaud Cool for thinking outside the box

I haven't heard Frank but they don't even have a website. What station doesn't have a website? The Frank moniker is known in radio but means nothing to listeners. Just because Nassau uses it elsewhere means nothing. Cool has good branding and an adult rock image. If Frank plays everything that means no image and I don't believe "everything" stations pull listeners from rock formats. I've also heard Nassau's trademark is cookie cutter, voicetracking, and some out of town. Time will tell but I wouldn't count on Cool sweating it in the future even if Frank pulls some decent numbers. By the way is Frank staffed or is it like Mike in Boston? Cool's cool. They play music for people who still like music. Most classic hits stations like B101 and WROR play music for people who used to like music.

"wouldn't count on Cool sweating it in the future even if Frank pulls some decent numbers..."

Cool's upper-management has been sweating it ever since Frank signed on. With one station (Frank) Nassau could put a serious dent into a couple of Quantum-owned signals (Cool, WCOD).

As long as COOL continues to play Jimmy Buffett, I'm ok with whatever else they decide to play! ;)

I live in Coastal New Jersey, and discovered WCIB in the spring of 1999 during a tropospheric ducting episode which allowed me to receive it OTA. A phenomenal radio station. Something I can listen to for hours!! Love the variety, from 60's pop to 70's deep cuts such as the Elton John track mentioned in the thread, along with Jimmy Buffett. And ya gotta love the Class Reunion with Ron Dwyer. Additional props to the staff there: I always get a response to email I send!

I'm glad Cool 102 streams again...prior to that I could not listen in winter or at other times when the troposphere isn't 'hot.' I just wish a station near me would do this format :(

If you're a Ron Dwyer fan, you can also hear him most Monday through Thursday evenings 7-10 PM and Saturday afternoons from a bit after 2 to 6 PM on WATD 95.9 FM Marshfield, MA which serves the Massachusetts south shore, and also streams from their site http://www.959watd.com/. A great independent local commercial station.
