Cool 92.1 just isn't Cool

I've listened to them since literally day one and I don't understand why its still around! lol
They started off as a "true oldies" type format which I rather liked and it did 'decent' (for a voice tracked robot station). Early this year they went in a more Classic Hits direction (basically 92-9 The Wave... minus the '90s and '00) and they are just not cool anymore. Ratings wise they are doing far worse with the 'new oldies' then they ever did with the 'regular oldies (ie '60s based) They currently sit at a 0.5 ratings share.

So, any thoughts as to what will come of this frequency? I figure either go back to 'old oldies' or maybe Classic Country, or Hip Hop.

Hip Hop won't happen, been there and dont that in the 90's and it would take numbers away from sister 103 JAMZ, which had a great book this last time.

Classic Country...maybe, how about Top 40 to go against Hot 1005 and Z104 or HOT AC to go against 949 the Point

They should try oldtime local DJs and do a true oldies format like WLNG 92.1 Long Island. Bobby Jay is now on WHOV 88.1 from 6pm to 9pm Wednesdays so he should be available. Get the old local DJs and do it right, don't sound like a modern station playing ancient music....create a feel that you are travelling through time and really re-living the good old days.
Speaking of ratings......isn't it a matter of a station finding its niche with advertisers and not just ratings? I recall WCBS FM 101.1 in NYC not having great ratings for years but there was loyalty between listeners and advertisers that kept it going to the point that it is doing well now. What happpened to Cool 95.7? They were a better than average oldies station. I also liked WWSO 92.9 with the old school sound but what I like doesn't last long. How many format/call changes has 92.1 had over the years? I remember it as WJLY in the late 70s playing top 40 and weren't they called Vibe and Kiss in the 90s also? Those were good stations. I think in the 80s they played alternative rock?

Kool 95.7 WVKL changed from Oldies in early 2001 to its current format 95-7 RnB (Still WVKL-FM). They have been the number one station in Hampton Roads for many rating periods, so they clearly made a good decision! lol

December 2001 Oldies 92-9 (later 92-9 WFOG) came to be. They did pretty good in the ratings, but later switched to 92-9 The Wave (August 2005) Their ratings are better now.

Cool 92.1 came to be in 2005 (after the Wave started). Cool never did wonderfully well, what with the voice tracked DJs, although did peak out at a 1.9 ratings share the first year (which is okayish). They have in recent months dumped the '60s based Oldies for a '70s based Classic Hits (with half the playlist).

92.1 History eh Was Lite FM (92.1 /107.7) for a bit before becoming Cool. Before that it was 92.1 The Beat (Hip Hop) and that's all I know. haha The main issue is the Oldies format isn't as popular as it once was, and the signal isn't that great. If it was a 100kw station (like Bob FM or The Fox) then Oldies would stand a fighting chance.

I did a google search and found under WCDG Wikipedia alot of info......station changed formats and calls about a dozen times in the past few decades. Info there states that when it went oldies its first song played was Bill Deals bggest hit, What Kind of Fool. I think that is wrong, probably May I was their biggest hit.

Well the Bill Deal song was quoted from Vartv.com so I figure they got it right.
I live in Portsmouth and I must say it takes a bit of effort to hear that station.

Just checked my Billboard book and you are right, although the Tams had more success with the song a few years earlier. That is the group I associate with the song. Also noticed there are two Rhondells groups in V Beach performing....one is called Bill Deals Original Rhondells (which sound great) and another group call the Rhondells (which sound so-so).
