Didn't Randy Turner (former Oldies 97 PD) just move to Pamal? Maybe he'll wind up doing oldies again on 92.9?

I'm not really sure yet, but I would like to see oldies drop on 92.9 soon, just like the way WCBS-FM in New York City did since June 3rd of last year when it flipped from oldies to "Jack!". Maybe a top 40/CHR format would work if WFLY at 92.3 up in Albany will simulcast on WBPM at 92.9 soon and it will call it "Fly 92" and it will compete against K104. That would be a good idea. "Cool 92.9" stinks because of Rick McCaffery doing weekday mornings as well as on Friday nights doing the "Solid Gold Jukebox" and Rick Knight doing afternoons and Saturday mornings and on Saturday nights on one of the Lite-FM's doing his classic dance, KTU, "Mix 102.7" style thing with Claire Channel. I hope Rick McCaffery and Rick Knight, the two terrible jocks I would like see those getting rid of the station. Keep Rick on Saturday night on Lite-FM, it would be much better. In addition to some jocks would let go on 92.9 is Bill Williams. He was on 92.9 on weekends especially on fill-in's during the day. That should also get rid of that. Bill is still doing mornings on another oldies station, "Cruisin' 93.5" as simulcast on WCKL at 560. I would like to see 92.9 go. Maybe oldies should work on an AM station like WGHQ where they still carried that dreadful talk format. They had Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity on WGHQ during the day, but it doesn't get any competition from both WABC and WGY. I want to see oldies coming to AM, because it's an older demographic format. "Cool 92.9" had struggled in 12th place in the ratings in 12+ demos between 25-54 last fall. I hope maybe thse two stations like WBPM and WGHQ needs to change its format to something else soon.

There is NO room for a 3rd CHR in the market and why would Pamal cannibalize K104's effectiveness? It will either stay oldies or go AC to bring WHUD's brand north to step on Lite-FM's 3 station territory.

Or maybe if they could flip to an adult hits station like the one in Stamford, Connecticut for example 96.7 The Coast (formerly WKHL's "Kool 96.7"), this should be an updated version of the oldies format with adding a lot more 80's with a few 60's and some 70's songs. This is according to its playlists on "The Coast" website:

Randy Turner is Production Director at Pamal and also appears to do fill-in work on WHUD. I'm not sure how his high energy style matches up on the rather tame WHUD. He was always a great Oldies jock and I think sounded good a Mix too. If they're smart at Pamal, they'll think of a way to utilize Turner for 92.9.

Oldies have become a bad word on radio because advertisers picture doddering old people with no money to spend. I am 54 and not ready to roll over yet, and out there spending every dime I earn, and nowhere near retirement. I know oldies, or better yet classic top 40 stations are dropping like flies, and that is a shame. I hope they leave 92.9 WBPM alone. It is a good station and fills a hole in the market. Your suggestion that they simulcast WFLY is utter nonsense, since they are basically the same as Pamal’s Hudson valley K 104. As far as putting oldies only on AM, while we grew up with radio that way, we now know radio can be much better. AM is just low modulation , resulting in bad sound quality ,lots of static and interference and especially at night a signal that can only be heard for a few miles before being swallowed up in the garble.
WBPM and before that WRKW on 92.9 has always been ratings challenged in the Poughkeepsie market because they are licensed to Saugerties, have somewhat of a southwest null to protect 92.7 WRRV. Their signal drops off sharply south of Poughkeepsie. I have no problem with diversity in radio and understand people wanting a dance station but there are other places better suited, i.e. 94.3 /97.3 the WOLF. They do poorly in the ratings and there is already a successful country station in town. Leave oldies alone!
From a technical standpoint I wonder if Palma could program WBPM or WGNQ from their Beacon studios , because despite the FCC relaxing regulations regarding station location relative to their COL I believe they must still be able to be received over the air from the studio, which is a big stretch if not imposable .
As far as how long it will take to transfer the stations, and make any changes, that depends on how long it takes for FCC approval. It usually takes at least several months.

Thank you very much for that story MHVRadiofan. Remember back on June 3rd of last year when WCBS-FM dropped oldies to "Jack" and then there is still no oldies station in New York City? Thanks to WABC for bringing Mark Simone to Saturday Nights for "Saturday Night Oldies" from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM. After the show is over, some listeners could go back to WBPM's "Cool 92.9" for more oldies all the time after listening to WABC on Saturday nights. Is that true?

Re: WBPM's History

I will give you a history of the station since this was from a now defunct "Hudson Valley Radio Guide" website since I found it on the Internet Archive:

94.3 WBPM Kingston

Launched around 1965 as WGHQ-FM, running Beautiful Music from the start (with some simulcasts of the AM in off-peak hours). Flipped to automated Top 40 in early 1975, switching calls to WBPM ("World's Best Popular Music") by late 1976. By 1984 had become a totally-live CHR, "B-94", which was the starting point for several longtime area jocks (Lou Brown and Mike Dylan of WBWZ, Carl Dayton, Mike Vincent, CJ MacIntyre-who has been there on and off since then). By the mid 90's a change of ownership (to Jean and Walter Maxwell's "Historic Hudson Valley Radio" )led to much cutting and not putting money for new on-air imaging (the same jingles/Charlie Van Dyke liners from the mid 80's lasted nearly 15 years). By 1996, B-94 went to a rhythmic lean (plus gold from their glory days) to counter against the then-adult leaning WSPK. When WSPK became dance-leaning mainstream, B-94 went to a cult favorite mix of obscure hardcore dance, urban hits, and early 90's CHR. Was sold in 1999 to Roberts Radio (and divested by Clear Channel in 2000 to Concord Media) and flipped to Rhythmic Oldies "Rhythm 94-3" on June 10. CJ MacIntyre returned to do mornings (after about 4 months gone from B-94) and Lou Brown has done various shifts as well.

By the way, to get myself updated, "Rhythm 94.3" was dropped in 2001 and it became "Cool 94.3" since it flipped from rhythmic oldies to straight oldies playing oldies from the 50's and 60's. In 2003, Cumulus bought the station to run oldies from its studios at Pendell Rd. In October, oldies has dropped the bucket and flipped to country as "Kicks 94.3" for two years and it becomes what the station is known today as "The Wolf". y he way, the station is still doing badly and they tried to compete with Clear Channel's top rated country station WRWD, because WRWD is doing just great. In 2004, 92.9 went on the air as WBPM as oldies on "Cool 92.9" and it's still a Clear Channel station after the call letter change from WRKW. I hope Pamal would be happy to buy this station if Clear Channel gets out of the picture. And that's my story.

compete against themselves? fly92 and k104 are co owned arent they?

Or maybe Pamal will flip oldies to a MOViN-type format. I know that the MOViN format is based in Seattle, but I hope if it's coming to the Hudson Valley soon. They got some good music like the way Rhythm 94.3 does play the same kind of music, I hope it would make way for the MOViN format. ou should checkout our website:

This is an example of how the format should be coming to the Hudson Valley.

Re: COOL 92.9 SOLD

Isnt Cool 92.3 really 92.9 out of Kingston/Poughkeepsie?

I know that Clear Channel swapped with Pamal because Clear Channel wanted a property in the Springfield, MA market

Look at the CC's cluster, they got two oldies stations. One in Saugerties is WBPM (before Pamal) playing oldies on 92.9 and the one in Hudson is WCZR playing the same thing on 93.5. CC Hudson Valley is continue to cannibalize these two oldies stations. I'm not really sure if Pamal comes in and change the format of 92.9. I don't know, but I don't see it coming anytime soon.

Word on the street is 92.9 is going some form of Active Rock to compete with RRV and PDH. It should be fun to see what they do. There hasn't been any competion in the rock arena in a long time.
