Cool 95.9 - Woodruff WQUL

I'm not that familiar with this station or what it's history was. But noticed just a few days ago that I could no longer pick up Channel 96.1 from Charlotte in the Greenville area. It was coming in pretty strong. So I found that I was now getting 95.9 from Woodruff.

Cool seems to be mostly 60s and 70s so generally won't appeal to me, but just was wondering if they got a stronger signal/tower? Or did they just start similcasting on FM (they also are on 1510 AM, which may explain why their FM station still sounds like it's run out of a can)?

I mostly listen to MY 102.5 now a days, but if there's a song that I don't like on, I'll try B93.7 and my third station down the line was 96.1.

Not a biggie since 102.5 has been getting better in its new format, but just wondered what the story was with WQUL.

95.9 is W240BO, a translator on FM for WQUL-AM 1510 in Woodruff. It's been on for a couple of years. They broadcast the FM in mono so it goes out a little further, that gives it the "canny"/dull sound, somewhat. I can get it in southeastern Greenville county, but have never noticed it really interfere with 96.1. I'll try it next time I'm out that way.

Their music is a little too rhythmic for me, but I like Channel 96.1 a lot more than B...they sound so much better..

I can agree with you there. But while 96.1 was pretty strong in my area (near Woodruff Road / I-385 / I-85), I would get a little static going into my neighborhood. Guess that's why it's third on my list (used to be 2nd until MY pushed itself to the front).

Anyway, all I get now (starting this week) is pretty much pure static on 96.1 in the aforementioned area. Tuned around a bit and caught 95.9, which I don't remember ever hearing before. So not sure if that's the cause or not.

Oh! Go to the Charlotte board for more info on their signal. 96.1's main antenna/tower is out of commission right now and the signal is not as good. That's why you can't get them. I can't either.

Ah, thanks, should have thought of it the other way around too...that it was 96.1's lack of signal not 95.9's strength causing the issue.
