Cool Edit On A Jump Drive

Before I try, does anyone know whether Cool Edit can be loaded on to a jump drive and used on other computers?

No, most software is not designed to be used that way...you need a license for each machine you plan to use it on.

Most programs of any sophistication require an "install" process which goes in and creates entries in the registry among other things. DOS programs used to work without installation. I have written a few simple VisualBasic programs that will function from anywhere, anytime without install. I would be surprised if Cool Edit would.

Technically, if you have a program on a machine and you give that machine to your brother and obtain a new machine, you would feel free to uninstall Cool Edit from the first machine and put it on the new machine. The publishers expectation is that this is something that might happen once or twice in the lifetime of the particular software.

If Cool Edit could be fully installed within your jump drive and it would actually work that way, then removing the jump drive would possibly be comparable to uninstalling in preparation for a move.

Some software licenses will get very, very picky in their details. I wouldn't build a business around my ability to move CE from machine to machine to machine.

Let us know if it works. Just in case the publisher has no sense of humor, we promise to see you on visitor's day. :)

Sure you do (wink, wink)

If you really mean the original "Cool Edit" from Syntrillium..yeah it might very well work...Adobe 1.5 is less forgiving, and 2.0 is a (excuse the comparison) "Nazi" But CEP 2.0 can probably be expanded onto any removable drive..even an SD chip for that matter..You just need to assign folders for your audio to "live" that are elsewhere on a hard-drive..Try it and let us know if it works.

I have a copy of Cool Edit 2.0 (not Adobe). I placed it on a 1GIG jump drive and had no luck. I may have an older version that I could try. My needs are very basic at this point. I'll try it again and let you know what happens..

If your needs are "really" basic, I've used some version of Audacity or another on a removeable drive ... Audacity

I don't think you can export MP3s when the program runs on a jump drive, though.

Thanks for the tip. I carry simple mono MP3 files from one machine to another. Occasionaly I have the need to edit them. Simple stuff, usually just cutting unwanted material.

I'll check in the Audacity angle.

Audacity & MP3s

If you want to export MP3s, you'd need to put the lame encoder on the jump drive as well. When you go to do the export, it asks for the location of the lame encoder. Simply tell it the location of the jump drive.
