Cool Edit Pro: "calling the mothership?"

After accepting Verizon's free trial month of internet protection on our new FIOS line, the security program caught Cool Edit Pro 1.2 attempting to access the internet (which I chose to "block," not allowing it).

Why? Can I turn it off?

Is is possible that this is why my program crashes SO frequently? I am on a Dell Pentium 4 with Windows XP, and CEP frequently freezes up (saying "not responding"). On the "Windows Task Manager," I see an identical CEP task... but hitting "switch task" or "end task" to either or both does nothing. Will unplugging my router while in production help?

---

I bought this original copy on e-bay, is it worth shelling out full price for the new Adobe Audition? Or shall I seek an older version of Audition on e-bay, then pay for the upgrade?

I had not heard of Cool Edit doing that..but Adobe Audition (especially 2.0 and 3.0) does. Are you sure you have a legitimate version of Cool Edit? If you bought it on ebay, there is a possibility that somebody copied it and just let you have a cracked reg code. Not a good idea on a lot of levels.

The printed CD and jewel case insert are all original CEP 1.0. Previous owner included a CD with CEP 1.2 upgrade on it. Could've used the instruction book, though.

Any opinions on "Pro Tools Academic"? I qualify for a good deal on it, but the catalog says "Requires Pro Tools-compatible M-Audio interface." Can anyone explain this in English to someone who grew up on cart decks, cutting-and-splicing tape, and back-erase editing?

If my tax guy says I can write off both, then I may buy both the latest AA and this PT (which is the preference of some stations where I am applying for jobs... I figure it would be a good investment).

I have this same set up. Audition 2.0 on my windows machine, and Pro Tools on my Mac Book. With Pro Tools, you need a hardware device to operate the software, which is what they mean by PT compatable device. I have a M-BOX Mini2, which included the Pro Tools software and all the goodies for around $275.00. Here is a link to the web site that may give you some info that will help you find the product that is right for you. http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=104&langid=100&itemid=23596

Good luck.

Digidesign requires that you use either thier audio interfaces (sound cards) or compatable cards that are "approved by Digidesign" (read as: making money for Digidesign)

That little M-Box mini is neat, and yes it smart to have a solid working knowlege of both PT and AA. Both good investments.
