Solid all morning, as expected. But, I was down at the King Center and found it very disrepectful that V-103 decided to put up their remote tent on the sidewalk near Dr. King's tomb, and was broadcasting down there.

People were stopping at the grave to place flowers and pay their respects, and V is blaring commericals for Comcast Cable and the Georgia Lottery.

They treated it like a remote. I half expected them to place a bumpersticker on the tombstone.

No it's more than tacky - it's being ghetto trash who have no respect for the King Family. They work tirelessly for civil rights and then they are down there doing a promotion. Have some decency V-103!
 
It's a sad day but it's a competitive business and WGST beat WSB handily on this one. Of all the networks to break a civil rights story, FOXNEWS had the story first and WGST beat their omnipotent rivals by at least a full fifteen minutes. One win for the little guys.
 
Mark this one down, it doesn't happen often...something actually positive written on this board about WGST.

Actually NBC NEWS - Today Show broke the news first. I doubt Andrew Young would ever call FOXNEWS with a scoop.

Wow, I wouldn't have expected that from the #1 Urban station in Atlanta. Its kinda nice to hear they were actually live at the King Center instead of in the studios. Channel 2 is also doing the evening newscast live at the King Center with solid coverage.

All the stations were there, but they showed due respect for the location and the occasion. They were there to report what was happening, not to make themselves part of the story, nor to promote themselves at the expense of the occasion.

What V-103 did was disrespectful, to the Kings, to the mourners, and to other reporters who were down there acting professionally. What visitors saw, and heard, was a media event, blasting through the speakers of V-103, and that made ALL the media look like they didn't care.

It was beyond tacky. And Mrs. King and the people who came there to pay their proper respects deserved better.


PS Just hypothetically. If a non-urban station had done it, and V had not, they'd be the first to scream how that station had dissed the Kings. If you think I'm wrong, so be it. But I'm not.

I thought the onsite reporting was a bit much. It was show boating as is typically done now days by media outlets and not one bit necessary. I had rather see more in depth reporting on Ms. King with more emphasis on the details of her life that we may have forgotten or may not have known about. Onsite broadcasts are really just for the "feel good" crowd . . .

Our Southern custom is to allow the family their privacy and show respect by pulling to the side of the road as the funeral procession passes by. A few of us still do it on Peachtree Road in old Brookhaven . . . Making a spectacle of yourself and your broadcast organization must be the way of news organizations today. Does their presence make them better or does it make Ms. King's death better?

All of this onsite stuff - even though it was at the MLK Center - was rather odd seeing how Ms. King passed out of the country . . .

It's true. Fox News got it first at 7:03 a.m. but a PR firm sent out the release to everybody. Fox just happened to get it on air first. The Today Show called Andrew Young first.
 
AM750 I think was a little timid in the reporting. I think they broke in around 7:27 with a little teaser for about 10 minutes for 'breaking news'. I received a page from a source, and Tom "The King" Hughes already had Tyrone Brooks on-line about 5 minutes before Slade made any announcement. It also sounded a little timid..
