Corm and the Coach.... again!

i might be wrong but think this is going to be a tough sell. back in sp '08 arbitron C & C were tied for fifth in the market in men 25-54. they were getting beat by OKO, the buzz, XXX, IZN and KOL. the fact they are on a new signal that isn't the best and on a new station with all syndicated talk programming the rest of the day makes me think it won't exactly rule the market. i think the tv station simulcast is also not too huge a deal as they it's a low power tv and it's not on any cable systems and probably won't be for awhile. plus a standalone fm is a pretty tough sell these days. but i might be totally wrong. if i was it wouldn't be the first time! :)

I wish them good luck...they will need it. A start up radio station built around a morning show that should have found other professions years ago, in a market that doesn't need another signal. :-[

"Found other professions?" Hey, didja hear that "The Coach" is an actual basketball coach? He did that for a couple of years. Coached a team in a really big game against Syracuse once. But you know, it wasn't a seminal Burlington sporting event or anyting.

Yes Will, it was an important moment. But it was 5 years ago and he hasn't been in the spotlight for quite a long time. I don't doubt that he has good name recognition in the market but over the past few years that didn't translate into any kind of ratings. I'm not saying there won't be some talk about them inititially but neither will the station and their program attain huge ratings. Coach was only showing up on the program 50% of the time and, no matter what is said, a leopard won't change it's spots.

I guess ESPN doesn't count? When you think of Vermont you think of Tom Brennan. He is by far one of the funniest, most beloved and recognizable faces in the state.
You might be right professor, but time will tell. Not that I would put money down on anything said by the geniuses on this board.

He'll be there more frequently now that he's no longer on ESPN.

Even his showing up a bit more may not have a big effect on the ratings. They couldn't garner more than a fifth place showing in their target demo even after many years of morning radio. Forget their ratings when Stern was on the air...he beat them 4-1. And yes, Brennan was on ESPN but mostly relegated to ESPN2 and the games that started at 11pm during college hoops. I'm not sure I'd agree that when most people think of Vermont they think of Tom Brennan. You're looking at it from your own perspective as it relates to sports and not from the mass audience. Again...look at the history and that show has not been a ratings grabber for quite a few years now...even in it's target demo.

"Is" an actual basketball coach?

Try "was"....

And yeah, that Syracuse win was a big deal 5 years ago, but year in and year out, hockey is the 800 pound gorilla on the UVM campus. I doubt that his return to the local airwaves will make any significant dent in the local ratings, esp. on a brand new standalone with a crappy signal.

Come on, Professor, you know better. Ratings in B-P are boobs on a bull. Heritage Ford doesn't care that "so and so had an 8.0 in morning drive", they care that "oh, they're that station with the show hosted by regular guys who talk about local stuff."

Lester, I'll have to hear 107.1 for myself when I'm up there next weekend. Where is 107.1 a problem in the area?

The ratings in B-P do matter. Hall pushes them endlessly so they are a factor. That seems to be the only way Hall sells these days. Businesses no longer spend shrinking ad dollars on an unproven show just because "it's the regular guys who talk about local stuff". Charlie and Ernie do that all morning and they aren't swimming in ad sales. And yes, 107.1 does have some problem areas in the car...and forget building penetration in most of the Vermont side except for a very few areas.

Charlie and Ernie (both talented class acts - bless them) aren't swimming in ad sales because they're on an AM station. Their revenues would double on an FM stick.

Hall has a 100K stick that plays country music. They don't need ratings. They might as well operate a mint out of their basement.

i'm sorry. i'm not trying to make this a 2 person debate but Hall also has 3 other FM stations besides WOKO and...guess what? all of them beat Corm/Coach in the 25-54 men demo. and guess what else? they use ratings to sell those stations. and i hate to tell you but they also use ratings to sell WOKO. Charlie/Ernie are nice guys but if you insist that "regular guys talking about local stuff" is the huge draw you imply then they would have higher ratings than they do. sorry Will, but i still say Corm/Coach will have a difficult time even making it into the 5th position with their target demo of men 25-54 or even men 35-64. the act is old. the listeners don't care. advertisers won't go running to get on it. they are the 18th station in town.

I don't understand "The Professor" drinking the "hater-ade"...obviously he has a personal axe to grind, either against Corm or The Coach.

I'm looking forward to what they have to offer, The Coach is a funny guy who in Champlain Valley radio, brings an instant personality that's sorely lacking these days.

These boards are funny. Radio "philes" are a funny lot. 80 % of the time we feel the need to sh-t on our fellow radio brothers and sisters. Why? Are we that un-satisfied with our own professional direction? Three simple words..."get a life"..

Not a hater of them at all...I've never talked or even met them. I saw them once doing a remote a few years back. I am simply making an arguement as to why i think they'll not take over the ratings here and be hard-pressed to get even top 5 in their demo. Sorry if you can't accept my reasons for my views. I don't think I am putting down anyone personally. Just looking at things based on past history and what i see to be reality. he was a funny guy beofre too but it didn't seem to get them in the winning column. What's going to change now? You related to them? :)

Thanks to Corm for choosing Free Talk Live for weeknights! :)

My guess is Doug Fleming the co-founder of this board did not intend for this forum to turn into a place to crap on other people or I know better than you. In some ways that is what our world has become. Why not be try to help a fellow broadcaster instead of shitting on each other. Dr Pepper, I think Colin Cowherd of ESPN says it best about what these boards have turned into, Full of liars and cowards who can't use their real names and need to get a life.

Hey Ian, can't wait to hear Free Talk Live. I hear it's a great show. Wow.... Something positive has been said. I'll try to be more hate filled next time.

Though, it's more fun to listen on the radio live. ;)

BS Boy...Quoting you from the "Burlington Stuff" thread.....

...."This has nothing to do with me, just laying out the facts. Most reasonable people would say, these facts spell trouble."

It's apparently okay for YOU to lay out the facts as long as you like those facts. It appears to me if someone else lays out facts that you don't like you immediately are accusing them of "crapping on people or I know better than you". The facts are C & C didn't win in their demo for the past 5 years. They have been as low as 7th place in that demo. Looking at just the facts (as you like to do) I don't expect that to change once they are on the 107.1 signal. I don't know why any reasonable person would expect anything different. Like i said, i don't even know the guys. never even talked to them. But i don't expect the audience to suddenly change it's listening habit history.
