Coronavirus relief bill includes $75M to public broadcasters

Public broadcasting is to receive emergency funding in the $2 trillion coronavirus relief bill approved by the Senate Wednesday.

The bill includes $75 million for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting “to prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus, including for fiscal stabilization grants to public telecommunications entities,” the bill says.

The bill directs CPB to use the funds to help “to maintain programming and services and preserve small and rural stations threatened by declines in non-Federal revenues.”

Patrick Butler, CEO of America’s Public Television Stations, said that corporate, foundation and individual giving to public television stations has “rapidly decreased in the wake of the economic downturn accompanying the contagion.”

Note the CPB gets the $75 Million funding from the COVID-19 relief bill.

A lot of NPR and PBS stations were fundraising in March, and it's not known how this affected their campaigns. I saw where a station in North Carolina said it was suspending its annual marathon to focus on the pandemic.

KUNM here in Albuquerque is doing what they call a "quiet drive" where they run short ads at different times asking listeners to donate via the website. They can also leave phone messages or mail checks. But with all the uncertainties it might be a harder time for anyone to ask for money.

I agree public radio can use the help at this time. Hopefully commercial stations can get some help too through help to small businesses. Most radio stations are the mom and pop types in lesser populated areas where the revenue potential is not as great as a major city. When a station loses many of it's big clients because of the Corona Virus, it can be the difference between the lights staying on or not. I feel most radio stations could use some help at this point. I am happy to see it for public stations.
