Corporate hits at WBZ

The cuts have generally been from 3 percent to 5 percent of each station’s staff, with WBZ in Boston apparently making the biggest reduction, paring about 20 positions. WBBM in Chicago cut about 17 jobs; KPIX in San Francisco dropped 14 positions; KYW in Philadelphia cut 12; KDKA in Pittsburgh and KOVR in Sacramento each dropped 10 and KCNC in Denver, 6. In addition, stations in Los Angeles, Dallas and Minneapolis cut an undisclosed number of positions

Yep, here's the Globe story on it: http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2008/04/02/big_names_to_sign_off_in_wbz_cuts/

Bob Lobel's departure is no shock, but I am surprised about Joyce Kulhawick. That's too bad - I've always thought highly of her. And, I really hope that she lands on her feet! About Scott Wahle, he'll probably end up ok in the end. He would seem to be a decent fit in most newsrooms.

i enjoyed joyce back in the day. she was always perky, zippy, serviceable arts reporter when boston arts and music scene was really hopping in the 80s and 90s. it's a different arts world now with corporate art sponsorships drying out. having her do two or three movie reviews a week and paying her a veteran salary just doesn't cut it in today's environment.

what is more shocking is how the former gm took care of lobel with such an absurdly longterm contract. no wonder the guy got booted out of there pretty quickly.

all these buyouts are still pressing on their bottom line so i am not sure how much $$$ it really saves them and the corporate in the long run. i can't see them getting a big name at the sports desk because of the big salary. for now, they'll probably rotate with burton(weeknights), roache(weekends) and alice cook reporting. dumping sports final is probably an option. lobel probably has one or two sports finals left to do, maybe even the marathon as his goodbye song but there's no way they'll let him stick around for may sweeps.

i wouldn't mind them going after duke castiglione who's at fox5 in ny. excellent anchor and reporter.
