Corporate radio no longer a problem in Lufkin-Nac!

How do independent stations level the playing field when in comes to corporate radio?
Create an independent radio owners association.
That's exactly what has happened in Lufkin.
6 stations… 96.3 KLSN, 100.1 KYBI, 101.9 KSML-FM, 103.3 KJCS, 1260 KSML & 1340 KRBA are now in the same building in downtown Lufkin.
These 3 owners are now sharing resources and marketing the stations as the largest cluster in the market.

Personally, I have serious doubts that KJCS would be part of that kind of arrangement. But who knows? Anything is possible in today's screwed up broadcasting world.

My sources go all the way to the top. The office in Nacogdoches is just a sales office and to "believe it", take a drive by KYBI and you'll see one of KJ-103's remote trailers.

I assume Stephen Yates is the Emperor of that little empire?

Speaking of whom, can we also assume that his legal problems last year in Polk County are behind him?

You'll have to confirm this, but I think Stephen lost control of his stations to his wife after that little bit of trouble in Polk county. That could be trouble for him later,,,because if memory serves me correctly,,,he hasn't been the very best husband,,if you know what I mean.

Lost control of his stations? Now that would take some legal gymnastics.

I don't understand how that could happen, just because of a drunk driving conviction. UNLESS -- his wife divorced him and got control of the stations in the settlement.

And I can't see that happening either. No matter what kind of trouble he was in, I can't see Stephen giving up control of a business his father started in the 1930s. hmmmm.

This bears closer investigation. I'll report on what I find out.

He has multiple convictions of either DUI or DWI, and his legal troubles go back several years. Since, I believe, it was considered a felony,,,I heard that control of Yates Broadcasting was transferred to his wife. I don't think Stephen would ever willfully give up control of his stations,,,but I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that his father started those stations. He showed his true colors when he sued them for control many years ago. Stand up guy. That's why this little collaboration between him and Bill Vance should be so very entertaining. Let's see how long it takes for them to start trying to "out-screw-over" the other one. Let the games begin!! I'll get the popcorn.

Sheesh. I am getting a major education on the situation in Lufkin radio. Thanks Steve. I was thinking seriously of approaching Stephen for a job when I retire to Lufkin in a couple of years. Based on what I'm learning from you, I think I'll look somewhere else. Like a Walmart greeter. Or driving a school bus.
