Corporate Radio

I've seen some great radio stations castrated by SOME, NOT ALL corporations buying clusters. (4 to 5 stations in a single market)

Top level managers are brought in at huge salaries to keep the cash flowing to the bigger fish and to start looking for budget cuts. Hey, it's America right and I'm all for it!

Sales people, are hired or retained, at a very fair wage, to pound the pavemnet and beg for money. Some with little or no training. Much less an understanding of what they are selling.
(The, this fart is brought to you by, and the just give it away and get the money crowd are now established)

Then comes the corporate programing guru from another state that has 100 other stations under their rule, and has never been to your town before.
With them comes the Cookie Cutter, 500 song play lists of mico-tested, mass appeal to play over and over and over. You see these people about once or twice a year. They can be contacted by voice or e-mail if you happen to have an original thought or want to add a song to their coveted list.

Only after a yes man, anything you say sir PD is in place, some of the programing underlings, if they are descent, are rewarded by keeping their jobs, only if they are multi-tasking cheap enough now. (will work for beer and pizza)

The product (music) has taken a back seat to the buck. Especially Classic Rock radio. When its milked for everything its worth and ALLOWED to get stale, blame it on the PD and jox then fire them. If that doesn't work Change the format.

Taking your product and listeners for granted is a big mistake. Satelite radio, I-pod & MP-3 manufactures love it.

I'll add that the over payed upper mgmt (Gms, OMs, MMs) never take a pay cut and rarely get axed. Yet the backbone of a radio station(s), those in programming, are the ones that get paid the least and are the ones most taken for granted and are most often the scapegoats. If sh*t rolls downhill, then why not cut it off at the source - upper mgmt.
