Corpus Christi airchecks!

Well as promised here are Corpus Christi airchecks from the July 4, 2010 weekend. All airchecks were taped Saturday, July 3, 2010. I think the only one of these stations that currently streams is KKPN. KNDA only has a Myspace page.

CHR/Rhythmic KZFM Hot Z95. This aircheck is of regular programming on Saturday. Z95 did go to the mix later in the weekend.

God how depressing, the imaging all sounds the same. The digital grunge is awful. Everybody getting drowned out in the same tired old talk beds.

The CC market doesn't excite me too much but I do think there are worse and I have lived all over the country.

I think Malkan is trying to do something interesting with KKBA and should be applauded, I think they are targeting people (particularly Latino females) who grew up with Z95 but have moved into the older demographic that maybe doesn't want to listen to hip hop all the time. I have heard few stations that sound KKBA in other markets.

KNDA is doing its own thing and I think really just exists to primarily support a local nightclub with alot of hip hop shows.

1150 AM I am worried about. I give them credit for trying something different in the market with the classic country but I still really don't hear any spots on this station. I have seen billboards around town but I worry that they may be headed back to another round of talk in the not so distant future.

Several of the Tejano stations are still live and local most of the time.

I do agree that radio isn't nearly as fun to listen to as what it was 20 years ago or more.

Big thanks for the Corpus airchecks. I visit the area every year, and actually kinda like the market. I've always really liked Malkan's stations and have complained endlessly about the fact that they won't stream. So thanks for the Z95 and K-Bay, especially. I like the fact that Malkan's stations have always sounded unique and custom taylored to the Corpus market. 92.7 K-Bay is one of my favorite Rhythmic AC's, and I think it is a perfect fit for Corpus's Hispanic female adult audience. I know some thought it was odd when they morphed from mainstream AC into rhythmic AC, and it probably wouldn't be wise in many markets, but in Corpus, this format IS the AC music preferred by most of the market's Latino adults who grew up on Z95. K-Bay, to me, just always sounds like Corpus Christi. I love putting them on and cruising along the bayfront and over to north beach.

Anyway, maybe someday Malkan will finally stream K-Bay and Hot Z95. Until then, I'd love to hear more airchecks on YouTube anytime you get the chance. Thanks again. :)

Thanks for the comments. KKBA has had its sound freshened up the past several months with a new morning show and a slightly different music mix as well as Saturday night mixes. I don't think it is any mistake that they moved the former Z voice over to KKBA, they also want the aging Z listeners over there too. I will try to post an aircheck of regular progamming on KKBA sometime in the near future.

i don't recall the voice on kbay being on z-95 very long or during its heyday. i do remember the voice which to me sounds forced and smaller market. they could do much better.

My personal view is, compared to what else is available in Corpus Christi, KKBA sounds pretty good.

I did hear some spots on 1150 this weekend while in CC. Problem was, they were all the same spots, back to back
Pizza State
Surf Club Records
Dairy Burger

But it worked. I had lunch at Pizza State yesterday :D

That is better than nothing, maybe they are making some slow progress.

Personally, I think Da Bomb 102.9 sounds much better than when I first moved to Corpus in 1996. The voiceovers at that time were very low quality, at least they now use a national talent.
