Corpus Christi, when did KRAD 105.5 change formats?

I was recently in Corpus a few weeks ago. I haven't been in years since then. I noticed that 105.5 was no longer rock, but regional Mexican. What happened?

As far as I can remember, I was in Corpus for the second time in the spring of 2002 and heard 105.5 as a regional mexican station so the format flip had to occur about 5 years ago (or maybe even earlier).
______________

It happened sometime in 2001 or early 2002 as I recall. It and its sister stations got purchased by a Spanish-language broadcaster. I believe it was the only one to flip. I want to say it was actually a CHR, then a bilingual station and then regional Mexican. It went through several formats in a six month period. Unfortunately, that's been pretty common with that frequency. I can remember it going from KITE 105.5 to KJKC to KCGR (two formats under those calls) to KISQ to KQTX to KZRK to KRAD to KMJR, which is has been for the last four or five years. I could have missed a few calls in there as it used to change formats constantly.

It was CHR "Power 105" in the mid 80's. Anyone remember the calls then?

I remember thinking the first time I heard that station while visiting family there that they were copying our Power 104 KRBE in Houston.

KJKC were the "Power 105" calls.

Yep, it's been a lot of things. KRAD 105.5 -- then with a modern rock format -- flipped to a Spanish/English top 40 format as "Radio Next 105.5" in the spring of 2001. It was sort of patterned after KNEX 106.1 Laredo at the time. It only lasted abou 6 months before it became regional Mexican KMJR "La Mejor."

I never really listened to that station but every time I would visit my family back in 2001 and 2002 and I recall hearing different formats on it. So I will go ahead and say 2001
______________

I knew "Sinful" Cindy Hernandez after her heydays of KRAD (she jumped ship to work sales at CheapChannel-CC). The station was pretty cool for the fact it was the only one at the time playing alt/alt. rock in that part of the state. Too bad the replaced it with regional mexicana...Just another bad business decision.
