Correction for theBIG D: WDRC(Ain't No Mountain High Enough)

I love the station, even though I'm on Long Island, it winds up on my car radio a lot;
however, in the spot where artists that are featured on the Big D are highlighted, they announce The Supremes and then play "Ain't No Mountain High Enough";
sorry, NOT a Supremes record, that was a solo Diana Ross record and YES, there is a difference;
but do play more Supremes with Jean Terrell singing lead, please(Up The Ladder To The Roof, Stoned Love, Nathan Jones,River Deep Mountain High with the 4 Tops,Floy Joy);
all amazing tracks that are unfairly neglected by oldies /classic radio

you are correct, these songs are neglected by most stations in this format, along with 80% of the songs people remember, but never hear. after some 25 years of this format being popular, people have heard the same 500 songs, and guess what? they want MORE! its time for some dessert along with the meat and potatoes. as a programmer my motto is "Don't Bore the audience"...touch a nerve, play a song sometimes that makes them say "OH SH!! haven't hear that one for a long long time. and you will OWN them, and they will wait for the next one that makes em' go WOW!

just curious why aren't you listening to cbs-fm? on long island?

cspotrun, great words there. I dumped FM a while back and went over to XM and for a long time I was loving it. Prior to their merger with Sirius they were subscribing to your motto. Great songs that hadn't been heard in forever. Each "decades" channel had a 3000+ song playlist - and of course included every song quoted by lalumia and more. Since the merge, we're down to the same junk I can hear on FM any day and the "decades" channels are playing roughly 800 songs each on a 24-hour commercial-free format. I guess that's what you get for letting a former CBS/Infinity programmer (Jon Zellner) take over the reins. ::)

Needless to say, WDRC is still one of the best commercial FM stations out there. How many other highly-rated FM "classic hits" stations do you find still putting 50's songs into the mix?

As far as oldies stations in Connecticut are concerned, a close second would be WKNL/Kool 101 - though they've been suspect of slowly mixing in some 80's tracks into their playlist - like virtually every station across the country with this format is want to do... Does WDRC play any 80's songs yet? Any at all?

"Up the Ladder" and "Stoned Love" have been on the DRC playlist for years and still pop up every week or two. With the advent of voicetracking outside of AM and PM drive (Is Mike Stevens VT'ed or not? I know he doesn't take phone requests anymore, but I can't tell whether the whole show is canned.), there aren't nearly as many "wow" moments as there used to be, but every so often you hear a "Get a Job" or a "Black Pearl" to break up the standard fare, which includes at least one '80s song an hour most of the time.

Big D plays more of the 60s rocknroll records that you hardly ever hear on CBS FM,as well as more of the aforementioned 'wow' records which I just don't hear on CBS FM(although I do listen to them as well, when I'm not studying Z100 and Party 105 for my DJ business purposes)
MORE 70s SUPREMES!!!!

some 50's songs work, its all about "Heritage", if you're in the format you can't ignore them, it is not only the foundation of Rock & Roll, but it is foundation of the format itself. i successfully programmed a station that included them along with a few 80's songs and the station was #1 in the target demo and ranked in the top 2 or 3 overall. when it comes to music, its all about variety. and of course there are other elements that make a radio station sound great, and if you want some of that give me a call i'm availible! 8)

I could be wrong, but the last time I sampled WDRC, I thought I heard an obscure song from an artist called New York's Dolls or something along those lines... someone back me up here...

New York Dolls? On DRC? I don't think so. DRC does play NRBQ's "Riding in My Car" and the Wildweeds' "No Good to Cry," which were only regional hits, but that's because the common thread in both bands is Al Anderson, who's from Windsor.

lalumia,

Being on LI, I'm surprised you haven't made 1 quick click to the right from 102.9 to 103.1, and oldies station B-103. I, too live in LI (Nassau County), unfortunately out of The Big D's reach on my car radio, and used to listen to DRC regularly when I lived in Hartford 5 1/2 years ago. Much wider & more obscure playlist on DRC, than most oldies stations. If you're not too deep into Suffolk County, WMTR (AM 1250) out of Morristown, NJ also plays a lot of rarely heard oldies.

the other stations (B103, CBS FM) don't constantly suprise and delight me with their choices the way DRC does; that's just the way it is...
and by the way, The New York Dolls had a great version of "Stranded In The Jungle" on their second album,back in 74....
top 40 back then avoided the glitter bands like the plague, and then the real plague happened... non stop Helen Reddy and John Denver...eeech!
