A couple nights before he got fired I caught his show. The topic was Senator Hutchinson in a spat with James Baker, two Republicans on opposite sides of the Iraq issue. Some fellow calls in from Louisiana. Now, if I was WBAP management, I'd like a guy like that on the show to showcase their strong signal, which on a clear night can cover five states. The guy proceeds to defend Baker, and Gold goes after the guy, calling him a "liberal" and a "democrat", and you can hear the guy in the background protesting that he was a Republican as Gold went after him, and it was obvious he was just trying to defend the Bush Sr crowd, which is the portion of the GOP that I think is leaving in droves. Gold berates the guy, then hangs up on him. Then he and the next few callers have a yuk yuk fest smearing Louisiana. Jeez, if I was management there I would be rankled by stuff like that. I kind of wondered when I heard he got canned once again if that phone call may have been the tipping point. it showcased a lot of what I think is wrong with Talk these days, and why some of this "school yard bully" stuff is bad for business. Nothing like pissing off an entire state, just like his Houston thing PO'd an entire city.
I caught some guy up in Louisville, KY while I was driving through this week. Nice, reasonable discussions, respect for varied points of view. I wish I had caught his name before the signal faded on me, but we need more of that. I'd like to see more "Bennet" and less "Savage".
