COST-CUTTING COSTS DAVID GOLD HIS JOB AT WBAP

A local talk host on the nights the Stars aren't playing was an easy target for the bean-counters getting ready for Citadel's takeover.

Sad really, david has alot both alot of talent and alot to say as well, shows where citadels loyalities lie.

One less local right winger. One more syndicated right winger who failed as a local talk show host here: Greg Knapp.

He's not a right winger. He's a libertarian.

Greg Knapp to WBAP.. from his web site....

The Greg Knapp Experience is adding a Dallas affiliate. WBAP 820 AM, the #1 talk station in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex will air the show weeknights from 8-10pm.

How is that!!! You would think Cumulus will envoke a non compete clause.

Re: COST-CUTTING ...yeah, right...

Cost-cutting...what an excuse...how about more like lack of ability to attract enough audience/advertising dollars to cover the nut...

How about ,eliminate as much local talent as possible and purchase more cheap syndicated product? Next up,the newsroom or whats left of it.

Greg Knapp Syndicated??? They must really be getting desparate! He's ok, but little Charisma.

Ah, the suits are major league celebrating and congratulating themselves on their outstandqing work in beefing up the company's bottom line. Three (or more) monkeys and a football.

Oh, you mean the ones with badly programmed chips and a speech impediment? So that's why he stations sound so bad.

The managements are composed of recycled parts from "Mr.Microphone
and some used "YUGOS".

If he's a libertarian, I'm a green duck.

I had one experience with him and I hope I never have another. We placed a buy on KPRC in Houston for election day in 2002 on the "Chris Baker Show", thinking that we would get exposure to more than the usual conservative audience with all kinds of folks checking in for election results. Well, Chris decided to take the day off and Gold came in as guest host. He proceeded to refer to the Democrats as the "Rats". The "rats" got so many votes here, and the "rats candidate" was doing poorly over there, etc to the point the show sounded like some kind of Nazi propaganda broadcast - three hours of this guy calling the Democrats "rats". Fun for him, but not for us. For the next week, we got emails, letters and phone calls from people telling us what we could do with our product. One went to the CEO, it was from a retired Army sargent who wanted to know why he should give his money to our company so we could pay Gold to call his mother a "rat". The letter then went off into a stream of obscenities. The CEO went through the roof, and I almost got fired. David just never understood that radio, beneath everything else, is a business. He seems to want to build an audience he wants instead of producing a show that recognizes the realities of the audience he's going to get. Just look at his website, it attracts zero ad dollars, looks like a funeral home and is populated by about six or seven posters, all of whom are still throwing around the 'rats' moniker. He better face up to the fact the web is his future cuz radio isn't looking to good for him.

Coining such lame phrases has been Gold's stock in trade for over 25 years.

When he worked at a small station in Tampa in the early 80s, he used to refer to liberals as "goo goos", short for "goody goodys."

A couple nights before he got fired I caught his show. The topic was Senator Hutchinson in a spat with James Baker, two Republicans on opposite sides of the Iraq issue. Some fellow calls in from Louisiana. Now, if I was WBAP management, I'd like a guy like that on the show to showcase their strong signal, which on a clear night can cover five states. The guy proceeds to defend Baker, and Gold goes after the guy, calling him a "liberal" and a "democrat", and you can hear the guy in the background protesting that he was a Republican as Gold went after him, and it was obvious he was just trying to defend the Bush Sr crowd, which is the portion of the GOP that I think is leaving in droves. Gold berates the guy, then hangs up on him. Then he and the next few callers have a yuk yuk fest smearing Louisiana. Jeez, if I was management there I would be rankled by stuff like that. I kind of wondered when I heard he got canned once again if that phone call may have been the tipping point. it showcased a lot of what I think is wrong with Talk these days, and why some of this "school yard bully" stuff is bad for business. Nothing like pissing off an entire state, just like his Houston thing PO'd an entire city.

I caught some guy up in Louisville, KY while I was driving through this week. Nice, reasonable discussions, respect for varied points of view. I wish I had caught his name before the signal faded on me, but we need more of that. I'd like to see more "Bennet" and less "Savage".

In the great Radio-Info tradition, 'TheSpinMan' creates a new log on just so he can trash someone. Welcome to the board, 'spin. Way to kick a guy when he's down. But don't worry about David Gold. He's a talented and resourceful fellow. He has accomplished more in his radio career than most.
